The best reading you will ever find in biochem

This textbook is excellent. It is superbly organized and very well written. There is a lot of information packed into each paragraph so you need to pay attention when reading.

Well written and not boring

The Essential Biochemistry textbook is actually very well put together. The authors did a great job explaining many things, however there are a few areas that were lacking in detail, which is why I gave it four stars. This book is great if you don't need extremely detailed explanations, but for someone like me who can only really understand concepts if they are fully and completely explained then I would supplement this book with another. Right now I'm waiting for the 2004 edition of Lehninger (I chose the older edition because of price). I heard it is much more detailed.

Overall the textbook serves its purpose and the writing isn't dry and is actually quite interesting. For someone who was dreading taking biochem this textbook has been great!

Not well written. Organization and developments of concepts is often not entirely clear or linear. Fairly major leaps in logic are made without explanation. Would not recommend.

Stay away from this book!

This book is riddled with validation errors. Go ahead and download the source code for this book and run it through the W3C validator. Almost all the examples fail validation. See page 77 for a classic example of bad code. The author nests list items inside anchor tags. How a book like this can make it to press is beyond me. These are not just typos I am talking about, this author is a bad coder!

Good novice intro

HTML5 Step by StepHTML5 Step by Step is a good introduction to HTML for the complete novice. "Step by Step" is literally the approach taken in the book, with explicit instructions for each action to be taken. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a first text for the business or hobby user; experienced HTML authors or developers looking for cutting-edge HTML5 features should look elsewhere.

The book uses a Microsoft landscape, so the editing tool of choice is Notepad, and the browser absorbing the most attention is Internet Explorer 9. Users of other operating systems can use the text, but they'll need to be savvy enough to translate the Microsoft terminology to their own platform ( which might be beyond the abilities of a true beginner ). Following the example code using Ubuntu and vi, I did not experience any significant problems.

HTML authoring tools are not covered in order to focus on the underlying HTML building blocks.

Since the instructions provided for the accompanying exercises are so explicit, they consume a great deal of print real estate. That does not leave much room for advanced features of HTML5, and you won't find those here. Hence, once you complete the exercises, this isn't a book you'll retain for reference.

Just Plain Wrong

I purchased this book as a resource to teach students about the new HTML5 semantic tags.

For the record, I'm a 15-year web design and development veteran with high levels of experience in HTML5/CSS3/PHP/Perl/WordPress, etc. I've started teaching over the last 4 years and many corporations are now upgrading to IE8 and IE9, which means that HTML5 tags are finally at their fingertips. I was hoping Microsoft would be able to provide a solid book from that standpoint, but this book definitely fails at that.

The majority of what you learn is, at best, HTML4 (and not even standards-based XHTML), with some HTML5 sprinkled in at random.

As I got further into the book, quite a few problems appeared:
- consistant use and advocation for the use of the I and B tags -- when they're said to be a LAST RESORT in the HTML5 specification as EM and STRONG have better semantic meaning
- examples to build and advocating for TABLE BASED LAYOUTS (a huge no-no)
- using images for links in a main navigation - no mention of Search Engine Optimization or practices therein - or the consequences of using image-based menus
- next to no mention of CSS2 or CSS3 tags that save time (for example, coloring every-other row in a table-based layout - you can use nth-child(2n) -- this is never mentioned)
- there's no explanation of where to use section vs article vs aside (and it's certainly not shown in the example besides a "do this and don't ask why"-type example)
- no mention of TH, THEAD, TBODY, TFOOT, or CAPTION tags, summary attribute, border-collapse style, or COLGROUPs in the Tables chapter...
- no required alt tags for many images
- using the a-tag anchors as opposed to showing ID-based anchor capabilities
- advocating for in-line (tag) styling and attribute-based modification vs the much cleaner and standardized CSS-based styling/modifications
- specifying fonts makes no mention of the @font-face command or possibilities therein or Google's webfont capabilities (ok as this one may not have existed in February 2011 - but @font-face DID and worked even in IE6)

And their advice as to what "many professional web developers" do - ("Many professional Web site designers do not create their own buttons, nor do they acquire them from others; instead they use button-creation programs to generate them" - location 4395, and several other bits - like "Many web developers still use tables for layout") - is just plain wrong.

Skip this book.

Pick up a different guide (I highly recommend the Head First series, but if you're not into JavaScript programming - the Head First HTML5 Programming: Building Web Apps with JavaScript may be too advanced for you -- and certainly does not do a good job covering the new HTML5 semantic markup, but Head First HTML and CSS - second edition with HTML5 tags - is great for this purpose and is lighter on the JavaScript!)

About the Author

Dorothy S. Becvar, Ph.D., is a Professor in the School of Social Work at Saint Louis University.  A Licensed Marital and Family Therapist and a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, she also has maintained a private practice, either full or part-time, since 1980  and is President/CEO of The Haelan Centers®, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to facilitating growth and wholeness in body, mind and spirit.  Dorothy has published extensively and in addition to many journal articles and book chapters is the author of three books, and the editor of two books. With her husband, Raphael J. Becvar, she has co-authored four books and is co-editor with others of two additional books.  She has just completed a five-year term as Editor of Contemporary Family Therapy:  An International Journal, and is a member of the editorial boards of several professional journals.   

 

Raphael J. (Ray) Becvar received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology at the University of Minnesota.  He has been a Professor at St. Louis University, Texas Tech University, Lindenwood University, and the University of Louisiana, Monroe where he held the Distinguished Scholar’s Endowed Chair in Marital and Family Therapy.  At St. Louis University and the University of Louisiana, Monroe he developed doctoral programs in Marital and Family Therapy.  He has been a part-time faculty member of Walden University since 2000 in Health and Human Services.  Ray’s philosophical/theoretical interests include systems theory, postmodernism, social constructionism, and constructivism as applied to work in Health and Human Services, Marriage and Family Therapy and Education.  He has authored/coauthored 10 books as well as numerous articles in professional and popular journals.  He maintains a small private practice specializing in Marital and Family Therapy.

Great introductory level and advanced level for Family Therapy

This book is an introduction to many facets of Family Therapy, so many times thought to be "one" thing, Family Therapy is many things. This book attempts to create a kind of opera magna in the sense that it gives a vast view regarding epistemology or various of the systems thoughts that nurture and continue to nurture the way family therapists think. The book goes on to cover many of the main "schools", "approaches" that have flourished along the years since it first appeared in the 1950s-1960s. this book benefits from the fact that both authors are senior members of the Family Therapy cluster and have met most of these authors and have first hand knowledge of the structure of each model presented in this book. Most importantly, the book covers boldly and thoroughly the issue of "self of the therapist", which is not unique to Family Therapy, yet second order cybernetics takes us along with this idea even further in the process of being part of the process of change for families.

W. Brian Rowe is a consulting engineer and recognized bearing expert with more than 30 years’ experience working on a wide range of machinery design problems across all industries. About the Author
Journalist and film critic Paolo D'Agostini has served on the screening committee of the Venice Film Festival. He has been a member of many film festival judging panels. Franco Zeffirelli earned worldwide acclaimed for his Academy Award-nominated 1968 film version of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. His 1977 TV mini-series Jesus of Nazareth is still shown on Easter weekend around the world. In November 2004 he was awarded an honorary knighthood by the UK. A member of the Italian senate since 1996, he is also an opera director, designer and producer.

Decent book but some odd choices

Some of the odd inclusions like 12 pages on the Lord of the Rings or Batman Returns. Many significant films like War of the Worlds, To Kill a Mockingbird aren't present. Still a decent book. Also book loses a star for it's inclusion of full frontal nudity with Clockwork Orange making this a non-family friendly book as well.

There are no pictures provided on how to do the exercises. His description of some of the exercises are vague. The chart that shows how to break down the routines by day dont show up very well on Kindle. Save your money.

I'd love to love this book

I'd love to love this book, but I got stopped in the "nutrition" section. First the author states that vegans and vegetarians can't get enough protein in their diet to sustain muscle growth. Then he goes on to say "I haven't read of any successful vegan or vegetarian bodybuilder or strength athlete." . Get your google on, Mr. Obidoski. Start with Austin Aries, and Zak Covalcik, and go on from there. I found scores in a few seconds.
Mr. Obidoski then goes on to bring up the "complete protein" myth. A "complete" food has all the essential amino acids (the amino acids that your body can't make. They must be found in the diet.) Besides the fact that soy beans are a complete protein, the entire concept of "complete protein" is a fallacy. True, if you only eat one food, you can get in trouble. But anyone who eats any reasonable diet excluding all animal products will have all the protein they need.
Most unfortunate that the author holds forth on a topic he obviously knows nothing about, and did nothing to research before pontificating on it.

A good introduction into the true meaning of isometrics. It explains how to do many exercises with and without equipment. The book really peaked my curiosity about it and now has me researching and developing a personal work out with many of the techniques, exercises, and methods I have learned from this book. This book is brief and does a great job of outlining what isometrics are and how to achieve these different methods.
