Nearly every man wants to be a gentleman. He may not know exactly what that means, but his true desire is to be respected and admired in the way only a gentleman can be. He wants to be prepared and confident, certain that his judgment is shrewd and his behavior appropriate. A gentleman considers the weight of his words and the impression he is leaving. He knows when to ignore his iPhone in favor of a face-to-face conversation, and he understands that sometimes he should simply say nothing at all. He knows what to do with his sport jacket at the end of the day, and what color shoes he should never wear to a funeral. Snapping at a telemarketer calling from some far-flung place? A gentleman realizes that’s no way to communicate with anyone. He knows the difference between “I’m sorry” and “Excuse me,” and he doesn’t use them interchangeably. Being a gentleman is timeless; these are ideals that will never be obliterated by technology, the latest social ideology, or protests from men who are content to do less.

They are AMAZED at what they call "white people rules
By Michael P. Furey
I teach in an urban setting and frequently hand this to students who don't have or want to do work during study hall. They are AMAZED at what they call "white people rules." As they go out into the work world, it gives them an excellent understanding of what many might consider "normal" behavior and gives them access to the unwritten rules of proper social behaviors.

A Common Sense, Pretencious Waste of Time (It Must be a Joke Book?)
By F. Fievet
The Gentleman's Book of Etiquette and Manual of Politeness by Cecil Hartley is a proper book on etiquette and politeness, but rather thick with the 1800s language and references. Therefore, I went looking for a more modern book that would hopefully update Hartley's ideals for a modern world. John Bridges' book came with a high rating and some rather glowing reviews, so it was my first choice and it was a poor one.
As others have stated, this book is more common sense than it is any sort of guide on how to be a gentlemen. There are a few nuggets that were insightful, but the majority of the 222 page book is the repetition of the phrase "the gentleman" and varying font sizes that reduce the length into about an hour and a half of dull reading. A less repetitive and static font size would possibly cut this book in half, putting it more in line with a Kindle Short than a hard back book costing nearly $13.
In addition, it also felt as though the book was intended as a joke by the author in many spots. How can dress up a book on etiquette for modern day and still throw in enough pretentious language and names that the reader does not notice the author's snickering? Many of the names and descriptive quotes were laugh out loud atrocious, truly terrible. Instead of giving the book one star, it adds another simply for the comedy factor of having to laugh at myself for purchasing it and the stereotypical country club satire examples.

This book is useful for those attempting to increase their professionalism
By Fallasha Merceron
This book is useful for those attempting to increase their professionalism, learning tactful manners, or simply wishing to be more formal. The ideas in the book are separated into a couple of "sections": each covering a different scenario and how a gentlemen would handle it. These environments include, but are not limited to; the airport, a funeral, how to use a phone respectfully, and how to dine. Some of the information over laps over certain sections so there isn't as much you have to remember. The only Flaw in my opinion is the books layout. You can find certain sections and read them, but it might take a lot of time to extract, yet alone remember, the information. Unlike most self help books, there is no summary at the end of the chapter with pointers. Unless you want to skim through the book multiple times, I recommend you either take notes, or highlight important information. Overall a good read, and John Bridges keeps it classy!
