Newport Boys: Book Two

Nightmares and panic attacks following a horrific tragedy leave Professor Elliot Lawrence a prisoner in his own home. After months of relying on his sister as his only connection to the outside world, Elliot is desperate for a sliver of independence. But leaving the safety of his home isn’t an option, not yet, and he reaches out in the most innocuous way he can think of: grocery delivery.

Colton Kelly, retired porn star and recent college grad, is struggling at two minimum wage jobs to make ends meet. During one of his grocery deliveries, he meets Elliot. Although the attraction between them is instant, they must first traverse the long road of putting Elliot back together. When disaster strikes yet again, this time in Colt’s life, Elliot’s not sure he’s strong enough to be the man Colt needs him to be.

Finally! Colt's story.
By Tams (TTC Books and more)
Elliot Lawrence is not only a trapped inside his home, crippled with severe anxiety if he even thinks about leaving, he is also a trapped in his own psyche. A student chose Elliot's classroom for his final resting place, putting a bullet in his brain while Elliot watched, horrified, un-moveable and unable to stop him. The beeping from the trash man collecting the garbage could send Elliot into a full blown melt down he is so broken and fragile. He realizes his dilemma and wants nothing more than to overcome his fear and anxiety, he just doesn't know how. At his sisters urging and needing to at least speak with another human being, Elliot places an order for groceries to be delivered from the local grocery store not realizing his life is about to change drastically once again.

Colton Kelly is trying very hard to put his past work history behind him. A former porn star doesn't bode well for someone that is trying to become a teacher. On top of that, his roommates just got married and will be moving on and starting their new life as husband and husband, and moving out of the home they've shared for so many years. Colt takes solace in his part time jobs while he continues to go on interviews to find a teaching job he so desperately wants.

When Colt arrives at Elliot's house to deliver his groceries, Elliot is smitten with his vibrant, friendly personality not to mention Colt's good looks. Conversation with Colt comes easy from the start and soon Elliot is ordering groceries again just so he can see Colt again. But the second time around a loud bang from outside sets off Elliot's anxiety attack and he sends Colt away out of embarrassment. Imagine Elliot's shock when Colt comes by unannounced the next day to check on him. From there a friendship is formed that quickly morphs into something more. Colt gently pushes Elliot to reconnect with the outside world and they grow closer with each passing day.

I love it when I read a story about an actual issue that is accurately written. Ashwood did her research into severe social anxiety disorder and it conveyed well. My heart went out to Elliot, his life snatched from him through an act of violence out of his control. Some people might think it's a phantom issue especially when Elliot didn't suffer any physical harm, but witnessing something so horrific can fracture a person’s psyche. And then Colton was so patient and understanding. Attraction is just a morsel of what it takes to love someone, he could have easily walked away from Elliot, but no, he dug his heals in and weathered the storm determined to help Elliot put his life back together.

This was a fast read for me as well, to spite the heavy subject that wove throughout the story. I was so intrigued by the relationship between Elliot and Colt, how they connected immediately and how they helped each other through the most difficult times, together. They were realistic, flawed, three dimensional characters that truly supported the storyline. I also liked that Ashwood gave us a peak at where Evan and Bran are at in their lives in the beginning all while wetting our appetites for Colt to find someone special to keep him warm at night.

Hopeless romantics be ware, this book will keep you up if you start it too late at night. You won’t be able to put it down once you start, it just sucks you in. Definitely a must read.

I must confess that besides Evan and Bran from Newport Boys 1, Colt was my next favorite, so I was thrilled to read and review his story!
Elliot is a professor that due to a tragic event, suddenly finds himself unable to leave his house without being seized by panic. From being independent and successful in his career, he’s now only a shadow of what he used to be, reduced to depend on his sister for everything.
Colt is gorgeous, loyal, a hard worker, and a retired porn star. His desire to change his life encouraged him to return to college and graduate. His next goal was to get a job as a professor, so he wouldn’t have to struggle with two low wage jobs.
Elliot next goal was to get better, to have his independence back, not depend on his sister… so in an attempt to meet new people and be more independent, he decided to ask for his groceries to be delivered.
Sparks came out when these two met. Suddenly Elliot’s life was not so barren anymore, and Colt realized that he had found more than he could ever hope for.
I love Cate Ashwood's writing, she has a way with words that keep you enthralled from the first page to the last one. I can’t wait for the next book in this great series.

Elliot Lawrence has been confined to his home for nearly a year. Ever since one of his students walked to the front of his classroom and blew his own brains out with a gun, loud noises and crowds send him into a panic attack. His dean is giving him plenty of leave time, so his job as a professor is safe, but the PTSD is crippling. He even picked his psychiatrist based on the fact that he makes house calls.

When he decides to try to be a little independent of his sister’s assistance, he orders groceries online, thinking it will be a relief for her to give up the duty. He hasn’t even allowed another person into his home since he broke down after the student’s suicide, but when handsome and personable Colton Kelly shows up with his order, he decides to take a risk and allow the young man in.

Colt is Evan’s friend who traveled with him to Eugene at the end of the first story, Keeping Sweets. He’s finally finished his college degree but can’t find employment as a teacher. So he resorts to part-time jobs and finds his job meeting new people very enjoyable. When he meets the stunning professor, he’s shocked to find out he never leaves his house. As they talk and find out they have a lot in common, the two become friendly, and over time, a stronger relationship develops. Colt is patient and kind, always encouraging and never negative about Elliot’s progress, or lack thereof, and slowly, Elliot starts to leave the house—baby steps, but steps nevertheless.

When Colt finally meets Elliot’s shrink, he can well understand why Elliot hasn’t made any progress. And when he investigates the man, he finds much more than he bargained for. But just as he’s about to help Elliot take another major step, he gets a call from his brother, and what the eighteen-year-old tells him shocks him to the core.

Watching Elliot’s progress through this story was one of the highlights. And though it may have been a bit too simplistic, it made for the type of romance Colt deserved. He’s just such a wonderful character that, as a reader, I just wanted to see that he got the happy ending Bran and Evan got. Speaking of which, as this story opens, it’s been five years since the first one closed, and we find ourselves at the wedding reception where the happy couple, Bran and Evan, are dancing the night away. That was such a nice surprise!

The interactions between Colt and his brothers, Elliot’s major progress, and the surprise about his shrink all added to my enjoyment of this story. And even though I didn’t find it to be very realistic, I did find it to be very sweet and enjoyable. The narrator, Michael Pauley, did a great job with the narrative and with the various character vocalizations.

I liked this story much more than the first, so I’d recommend it to those who’d like a few hours of a pleasant MM romance with just enough angst and conflict to provide balance to the positives.
