Review
This really is a quite wonderful book, written to teach the traditional Six Healing Sounds and the Inner Smile to children... Illustrated in bright colors and written so that a child can understand and follow the directions, this book is a welcome addition to the field of qigong for children, a growing and important field. -- Yang-Sheng Online Journal It is a great concept to introduce a healthy routine to youngsters in a very fun way... Actually anyone with a young heart can benefit from reading it. -- The Examiner I like that the book focuses on breathing deeply, smiling, and making the healing sounds to help kids better control emotions and be grateful. I think it is a positive book for children and one that teaches some important basic concepts that come from Qigong. If you practice, like I do, and want to share with your children, this book is a simple and fun way to do it. -- Alain Burrese, JD, Your Warrior's Edge blog Smiling and breathing techniques have existed for thousands of years, and in Six Healing Sounds with Lisa and Ted author and illustrator Lisa Spillane, writes about them simply and realistically... What a fun and easy way to experience Qigong, an ancient Chinese practice of aligning breath to cleanse stress from our bodies. These stories let children know that emotions are natural; the vignettes featuring kids named Lisa and Ted demonstrate situations and their commensurate healing techniques to help overcome bad feelings and let happiness flow... Adults can benefit as they read along with young ones. What a wonderful way to have a better outlook on life, reduce stress, and experience more happiness, together! -- ForeWord Reviews I read Six Healing Sounds with Lisa and Ted with my 3 year old grandson, and with a little bit of coaxing, he performed the motions and sounds and seemed more joyous afterward. This book was a delight, especially for integrating basic Qi Gong healing into a child's every day life. This book will help teach children that all emotions are normal, related to wellness, behaviors, organs, colors, breathing, and sounds. The 6 healing sounds are valuable coping mechanisms which can have a lasting positive effect, for the parents or caregivers as well... I believe that this simple primer should be available to all children, be stocked in every school library, and read in every household... In a society that separates mind and body to the point of malady and lacks basic emotional coping techniques even in adults, this book teaches connectivity and enhances joy and peace. Buy it, read it, and share it! -- Malina Chin, L.A - The Illinois Acupuncturist

Good way to introduce Qigong breathing and sounds to children
By Alain B. Burrese
As a martial art instructor, and someone who practices Qigong, I was happy to find "Six Healing Sounds with Lisa and Ted: Qigong for Children" by Lisa Spillane. (Spillane also illustrated the book) I think one of the most beneficial aspects for health is learning to breath. It is an important part of martial art and qigong training. It's also taught in many other disciplines as well as by doctor and health guru like Andrew Weil and success and motivational guru Tony Robbins. Breathing is the key to life, and learning breathing techniques have many benefits. Therefore, I applaud any resource to assist children with learning to breath.
Obviously, when one is used to reading Qigong resources like the books written by Dr. Jwing-Ming, this simple little book does not have much information. However, you must remember that this book is aimed at young children. While my six year old daughter is not ready to read longer works on Qigong, this book was simple and enjoyable for her to read. We've read it a couple times before bedtime now.
The book is fairly short and easy to read. After a two page note from the author about the book, there are six chapters. Each chapter is four pages long, and each has the same format. The first page of the four introduces the concept and body part for the chapter, the second page describes a problem and negative feeling, the third page teaches a breathing technique with an associated sound, and the last page of each chapter is a one or two page conclusion where the sound and breathing helped remedy the negative feeling.
The six chapters are Lisa's Happy Heart, Ted's Friendly Stomach, Lisa's Brave Lungs, Ted's Peaceful Kidneys, Lisa's Kind Liver, and Ted's Sleepy Head. The corresponding sounds are haaaww, whoooooooo, sssssssssssss, tchewwww, shhhhh, and heeeeee respectfully. As the titles suggest, Lisa and Ted alternate as the characters who feel the emotions and use breathing and sounds to calm themselves and be happy.
I'm guessing that parents that don't already have an understanding of Qigong, won't purchase a book like this for their children. For those that do study this Chinese practice, this book is a nice way to introduce a couple of the concepts to your young children. I like that the book focuses on breathing deeply, smiling, and making the healing sounds to help kids better control emotions and be grateful.
I think it is a positive book for children and one that teaches some important basic concepts that come from Qigong. If you practice, like I do, and want to share with your children, this book is a simple and fun way to do it.

GREAT beginner's book for children to start on Qigong
By Gratitude
I myself have started to venture into Yoga and Qigong for health reasons and fully appreciate the benefits of the deep breathing aspects of Yoga and Qigong. I have one child who is fully interested in learning what I am learning and practicing the moves with me at home as I practice them. I have another child who is curious but yet is not quite comfortable attempting the positions or breathing but will sort of linger nearby to see what his brother and I are doing at times. When this book arrived, before they went to bed, I briefly explained the benefits of learning HOW to breath and how it relates to various organs in your body and emotional feelings. They both sort of looked at me trying to comprehend what I was talking about. After reading this short, easy to read book, they both had this 'AHA!' look on their faces and BOTH actually practiced breathing some of the breathing exercises in the book. I have heard them both on more than on occasion to 'breathe out' when angry with one another too! I had to try hard not to chuckle, it was so cute.
This book is really easy to comprehend, fairly easy to read (my 6yr old Kindergartener can and does read it on his own at times), the illustration is very colorful and is self explanatory in that it depicts the situation - like when Lisa gets mad at her brother Ted and you see Ted in the background with a sad face. Six Healing Sounds takes you through how to breathe out anger and opening up her heart with 'love' and shows an illustration in which both Lisa and Ted are sitting happily together and explains how she apologizes to her younger brother and proceeds to go through breathing for your stomach (nerves, stress), lungs, kidney, liver and finally your head to calm things down and rest at night. I am glad to finally see these type of wonderful books on the marketplace for children and look forward for more to come in the future.

Beautiful in every way
By Ariaceliz
I absolutely adore this book. This illustrations are so soft and gentle. The actual instructions for the Qigong are so soothing and easy to do. Not just for children either! I am including these techniques in therapy for adults. My favorite example for school aged children is where the older sister realizes she needs to control her anger and be patient because her little brother cannot walk as fast as she can. Every part of the book focuses on the "feeling" anxiety, anger, sadness, etc.. This is a book to add to your collection and reuse it!
