A Clear Introduction to the Bootstrap & Applications

This is a well-written book, and I had the basic bootstrap notion figured-out and implemented within a few days, though it will be some time before I develop any serious depth of mastery of the material. For those unfamiliar with the bootstrap method, by a system of resampling from an existing sample of data it provides a means of establishing the standard error for pretty-near any statistical measure (like the standard error of the mean in traditional statistics), as well as the determination of general confidence intervals for those measures, even when the distribution of the data is non-gaussian or unknown. I do find the author's symbolic notation a bit confusing - perhaps TOO compact, and many of the symbolic expressions would really benefit from an associated clearly written paraphrasing (difficult for me to remember all the conventions after putting the book down for a few days). Still, to go from being barely aware of the technique to applying it to the data analysis in a current research project over a period of several weeks suggests that this text does a heck of a good job at conveying the intended introduction.

People might have many different reasons to use bootstrap techniques and they might have various backgrounds therefore this is a good book for readers that want to learn the bootstrap. If you do not have strong background in statistics then the practicals section will help you to programm and analyze the data. If you have background this book does show you the theory behind.

Great book! It shows the you the truth of how we got our present Bible and what role the Catholic Church play in that, if any at all! This book also shows the innacuracies of versions other than the KJV.

This is an excellent book, easy to read and very informative. God's work has been perserved in the King James Bible, believe it.

Interesting theories, unconvincing

The theories Daniels presents are interesting, but ultimately unconvincing. This is largely because the book lacks primary sources (or any sources) for its boldest claims. Many of the secondary sources come from other Chick Publications books. That alone does not disprove any of his claims, but it does make it difficult to convince an objective Protestant, a Catholic, or anyone Daniels/Chick would consider a non-believer. This book is best going to strengthen the faith of those who already agree with its premise, namely, that the Catholic church is evil, the Whore of Babylon, and is working hard to destroy God's "true word," the King James Bible.

Various problems:

*Daniels praises Erasmus for preserving and translating the "textus receptus" which he claims is the true word of God. But Erasmus didn't have the whole New Testament, and had to back translate using Jerome's Vulgate (which Daniels said is a perverted Bible)

*Daniels repeatedly says Catholics venerate Origen as a saint and church father. This is not true. He was condemned for heretical beliefs including, but not limited to, the pre-existence of souls, something he took from Plato but not from the Bible. For this reason, among others, Origen is respected but is not raised to the status of saint or father.

*Neither is Alphonsus Liguori a church father. He is seen as a "Doctor of the Church," which is something entirely different. Doctors are men and women who are great theologians throughout history. Fathers are men who lived in the first few centuries that helped form the church's teachings. Some fathers are doctors; some are not. Some doctors are fathers; some are not.

*From what I could tell, the Vaduois did not exist until the 12th or 13th century. Some Protestant theologians tried to tie them to earlier groups, but this is definitely a minority position not accepted by objective historians without an agenda.

Benefits of the book:

*Rightly points out the danger of the "big Bible" industry, whose goal is to make money.

*Rightly cautions us to show a profound reverence for the word of God, which means not just accepting any Bible version that comes along.

*Rightly points out the problems of the history of the Catholic Church, which lessens its credibility. But some Catholics may point to Matthew 23:2-3 (KJV), "[Jesus] Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not." Likewise, if the Catholic church's bishops have the authority of the apostles, it could apply to them as well and be interpreted as, "The bishops and Popes sit in the apostles' seat: All therefore whatsoever they bid you observe, that observe and do; but do not ye after their works: for they say, and do not."

About the Author
Sally Engle Merry is Silver Professor of Anthropology at New York University. She is the author and editor of nine books, including the J. Willard Hurst Prize-winning Colonizing Hawai'i: The Cultural Power of Law (2000). Her most recent book is Governance by Indicators (2012, co-edited with Kevin Davis, Angelina Fisher and Benedict Kingsbury).

Kevin E. Davis is Beller Family Professor of Business Law and Vice Dean at New York University School of Law. He has written extensively about anti-corruption law as well as the relationship between law and economic development in such journals as the American Journal of Comparative Law, the Law and Society Review, and the New York University Law Review.

Benedict Kingsbury is Murry and Ida Becker Professor of Law and director of the Institute for International Law and Justice at New York University School of Law. In addition to being co-Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of International Law he is the editor and co-editor of over fifteen books, including International Financial Institutions and Global Legal Governance (2011).

About the Author

SCOTT O. LILIENFELD received his B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He completed his clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1986 to 1987. He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at SUNY Albany from 1990 to 1994 and now is Professor of Psychology at Emory University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Psychological Science and was the recipient of the 1998 David Shakow Award from Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association for Early Career Contributions to Clinical Psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld is a past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology within Division 12. He is the founder and editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, Associate Editor of Applied and Preventive Psychology, and a regular columnist for Scientific American Mind magazine. He has authored or coauthored seven books and over 200 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Lilienfeld has also been a participant in Emory University’s “Great Teachers” lecturer series, as well as the Distinguished Speaker for the Psi Chi Honor Society at the American Psychological Association and numerous other national conventions.

STEVEN JAY LYNN received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University. He completed an NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lafayette Clinic, Detroit, Michigan, in 1976 and is now Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University (SUNY), where he is the director of the Psychological Clinic. Dr. Lynn is a fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, and he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award of the State University of New York for Scholarship and Creative Activities. Dr. Lynn has authored or edited 19 books and more than 260 other publications, and was� recently named on a list of “Top Producers of Scholarly Publications in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Programs” (2000-2004/Stewart, Wu, & Roberts, 2007, Journal of Clinical Psychology). Dr. Lynn has served as the editor of a book series for the American Psychological Association, and he has served on 11 editorial boards, including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Dr. Lynn’s research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Ohio Department of Mental Health.

LAURA L. NAMY received her B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology from Indiana University in 1993 and her doctorate in Cognitive Psychology at Northwestern University in 1998. She is now Associate Professor of Psychology and Core Faculty in Linguistics at Emory University. Dr. Namy is the editor of the Journal of Cognition and Development. At Emory, she is Director of the Emory Child Study Center and Associate Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture. Her research focuses on the origins and development of verbal and nonverbal symbol use in young children, sound symbolism in natural language, and the role of comparison in conceptual development.

NANCY J. WOOLF received her B.S. in Psychobiology at UCLA in 1978 and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983. She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. Her specialization is behavioral neuroscience, and her research spans the organization of acetylcholine systems, neural plasticity, memory, neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, and consciousness. In 1990 she won the Colby Prize from the Sigma Kappa Foundation, awarded for her achievements in scientific research in Alzheimer disease. In 2002 she received the Academic Advancement Program Faculty Recognition Award. She also received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Psychology Department at UCLA in 2008. Dr. Woolf is currently on the editorial boards of Science and Consciousness Review and Journal of Nanoneuroscience.

Almost identical to 1st edition.

I used the 1st edition of this book (loose leaf) in a class where the professor insisted on the brand new 2nd edition. It is almost word-for-word identical. There doesn't seem to be a perceivable difference. You can very safely get by with the old edition. This textbook is one of the worst examples of putting out a new edition for the sake of ripping off students that I've ever encountered

Great textbook - does everything right!

First of all, I would just like to say that I used this textbook for a Psychology 101 class at the University of Washington. If you go to UW, try and get this textbook NOT AT THE UW BOOK STORE! They will try and sell you a "UW Version" which you cannot sell back since it has a different ISBN even though it's identical to this version.

This is a great textbook. The tone is involving, it's not dry at all and even though some of the metaphors seem corny, it's a nice change of pace from what I was used to. It makes the reading almost "light" in a sense, where you can just understand it when you read it once - you don't have to read the same sentence over and over trying to understand it. It presses the same five topics into your head and provides constant examples of each on almost every page (Correlation doesn't equal causation, Occam's Razor, etc). This is a nice and non-intrusive way to remind you to think scientifically while reading.

The book also has a large focus on defusing "psuedoscience", products or advertisements which rely on faulty scientific methods or thinking. As a relatively intelligent college student at decent university, I thought I would be immune to these sort of fallacies in everyday life, but I was surprisingly wrong! The text teaches you about all the sneaky way advertisers try to trick you and the techniques they use, so you can avoid them. I found myself falling into some of these traps before, but after I read the book I recognized this pseudoscience right away. They also point out plenty of scientifically-based tests to disprove "mainstream psuedoscience" like astrology, tarot cards, fortune tellers, etc etc with empirically backed studies.

The MyPsychLab feature is surprisingly useful if you can gain access to it. If you can find it for under $45, I would say look into purchasing it. It's a nice way to study over and over before tests, and includes flash cards, quizzes, pretests, tests, and more for study purposes. In the end, I felt like I could have gained a lot of knowledge simply by reading the text. Combined with the instruction of a class, I feel way more ready to think scientifically and recognize my own scientific mistakes. It's very interesting and relevant science, and you will find yourself smiling as you realize how true these things are that you've never even thought of!

Excellent material and communication

The editors and authors did an amazing job at engaging the reader without seeming annoying or boring. I kept flipping through page after page (long chapters, but really interesting stuff) and never found myself having to "hate the authors." It has that "modern" writing style that is somewhat colloquial because they are conversing with you from beginning to end, so it makes it a lot more inclusive. Very happy my professor chose this book; got it in hardback and plan to keep it.

Tropical Gangsters II

Robert Klitgaard has done it again, in beautiful style . But this time he penetrates deeper into the inner texture of reform, into the painful process of change. He skillfully narrates the grueling process of conveying new ideas, and persuading reluctant players into changing their game, resist their instincts, and venture into the new. This is not for those looking for the broad picture, the grand ideas. Klitgaard this time trades the photography camera for the microscope, pealing into the inner layers, the fine grain beneath, and revealing surprising insights into the how of reform, seldom seeing in the literature. Fascinating reading!

Interesting but falls way short of the original

I loved the original "Tropical Gangsters" with its unique bland of economic/political analysis and personal anedoctes. This book tries to achieve the same feat, provides excellent, easy-to-read information on how to fight corruption but falls short of its predecessor (which, to be sure, was always a tough act to follow). The reason, I believe, is that this book is based on several short visits that allow plenty of curious anedoctes but not a deep knowledge of the country in question.

Fun, inspirational, and provocative

In Tropical Gangsters II Bob Klitgaard reminds us that the world of development is tangible, gritty and complex; involving real people making real decisions in response to seemingly impossible challenges. The stories Klitgaard tells are accessible and humorous but also have a depth of content and message that should challenge our theoretical understanding of development and inspire our efforts to do this work better. The book is a must read for the hardened, frustrated development expert looking to make sense of past experience but should also be on the reading list of every novice student of the subject. It will make these students wish they were out on the field and at the same time encourage a humble, human side to their future work.
