About the Author
Adrian Vickers is Professor of Southeast Asian Studies and Director of Asian Studies at the School of Languages and Cultures, University of Sydney. He is author of the acclaimed Bali: A Paradise Created (1989). I'm several chapters into the book. Well written, easy to follow and quite intriguing! I am not a history buff and this book is getting me through some interesting facts without boring me at all.

I'm willing to be proven wrong, but it seems poorly written and not exactly well-interpreted

The beginning of the book hops from topic to topic and person to person without strong connections. It's almost like you're reading a wikipedia entry and then you get distracted by one of the links, then a link within that link, then yet another link, all before finally returning to the original topic to read a bit further before the next link distracts you.

Also, I'm concerned about overall interpretations of the book. Because when I looked up the Bre-X it looks as though it was more the doings of an individual geologist and possibly some people at the company rather than the New World government as the author implies. He also states the geologist responsible for the situation supposedly fell out of a helicopters but was really "secreted out of the country" though I have not been able to find definitive evidence that this is the case.

Now that I know how strong the bias is in this case, it seems like I'll have to re-research almost everything I thought the book was teaching me. Which is very unfortunate.

Like I said, I'm willing to be proven wrong though.

For example, one time I have to troubleshoot a very tricky race condition issue. The rule "quite thinking and look" forced me not to make any pre-assumptions, and rather look into the loggings and the data in the database. Along with "divide and conquer", I was able to narrow down the amount of data to look into and find it is a race condition issue by looking at the update date fields.

Interestingly enough, I think some programmers do make pre-assumptions when troubleshooting. This set of debugging rules advice against the pre-assumptions and stick with scientific methodologies.

Excellent non-technical book

I greatly enjoyed reading this book on the metro because it was non-technical and it sounded just like when I help my father solve various electronic/mechanical issues. In fact, it was like he was right there telling me the war stories despite him being 5800KM away.

As per pros for the book:
* Rang true with me by stating, don't get lost in the details, but actually get in there and LOOK at the problem - not read about it.
* Good stories and examples
* Good flow and not boring
* Good techniques for problem solving
* Good price for the content

Cons:
* Reads a bit like a personal opinion like rant
* Needs a bit more editing (small typos)
* Slightly repetitive (but I understand that this may have been a literary tactic)

Honestly, this was a good read and I would gladly recommend this book for any person attempting to improve their thought process regarding debugging or solving problems. Undergraduate and graduate students + professors should seek to read this book or have it among the required readings for advanced programming classes.

Excellent debugging tips!

I just finished reading David Agans' wonderful book, "Debugging". I've worked in the software development field for many years and I wish I had this book when I started out. I really like his approach to debugging because it is practical and methodical. In a nutshell, David suggests that you should trust no one, "stop thinking and look". Basically, rely on how you think the module / code should work. You need to look and verify the actions / results.

Even if you are not a software developer or an engineer, this book is still valuable. Members of the QA team and help desk can also benefit from this book. It will help you in your troubleshooting efforts and also allow you to file bug reports that contain good data.

This book is only 175 pages, it is an easy read ... but it is filled with practical advice. Great job David!

Sam Hamill is Founding Editor of Copper Canyon Press, where he edited and printed for 32 years while writing more than forty volumes of poetry, essays, and celebrated translations from ancient Chinese, Japanese, Greek, Latin, and Estonian. Excellent resource for musicians

I found this guide immensely helpful in improving my level of musicianship. This book pulls together hundreds of academic articles and books on various topics that affect the activity of making music, and distills those resources into a concise, very readable form. I particularly found the chapters titled "Measuring performance enhancement in music," "Strategies for individual practice," "Strategies for memorizing music," and "Strategies for sight-reading and improvising music" to be particularly helpful, as they offered a wide variety of suggestions on making improvements to musical performance.

It also includes a section on physical fitness that discusses the various ways that musicians can address issues of muscle and joint pain, anxiety, and other ailments that may result from repetitive stress and poor technique. It also discusses the much-disputed Alexander Technique, which has many adherents in the performance arts.

Many of the ideas can be found in other texts, and not all the ideas may be helpful to any particular individual, but this singular book is well researched and is a must-read for any musician. I found it much more comprehensize than the books "The Inner Game of Music" and "What Every Pianist Needs to Know About the Body."

This book is what music teachers and performers have been waiting for. I am grateful for the diversity and integrity of the research in it. The rehearsal and performance strategies it offers are ideally specific and get remarkable results. I cannot think of a performer or music educator for whom the information in this book would not be of great benefit. Hats off to the authors for this landmark publication!

I especially appreciate the chapter on memorizing music as an aide in teaching my piano students how to memorize for a recital. The techniques on how to deal with performance gitters is very useful, too. A companion book by A.C. Lehmann, J.A. Sloboda, and R.H.
