About the Author
Roger A. Freedman is a Lecturer in Physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. At UCSB, Dr. Freedman has taught in both the Department of Physics and the College of Creative Studies, a branch of the university intended for highly gifted and motivated undergraduates. He has published research in nuclear physics, elementary particle physics, and laser physics. In recent years, he has helped to develop computer-based tools for learning introductory physics and astronomy and helped pioneer the use of classroom response systems and the "flipped" classroom model at UCSB. He is co-author of three introductory textbooks: University Physics (Pearson), Universe (Freeman), and Investigating Astronomy (Freeman). Robert M. Geller teaches and conducts research in astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA. Using data from the Hubble Space Telescope, he is currently involved in a search for bursts of lights that are predicted to occur when a supermassive black hole consumes a star. Dr. Gellar als has a strong emphasis on education, and he received the Distinguished Teaching Award at UCSB in 2003. William J. Kaufman III (deceased) was the author of the first four editions of Universe. During his career he held positions at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles, San Diego State University, UCLA, Caltech, and the University of Illinois, USA. A prolific author, his many books include Black Holes and Warped Spacetime, Relativity and Cosmology, The Cosmic Frontiers of General Relativity, Exploration of the Solar System, Planets and Moons, Stars and Nebulas, Galaxies and Quasars, and Supercomputing and the Transformation of Science. Dr. Kaufmann died in 1994.

As good as it gets

I had the fortune, and sometimes misfortune, to read a fair number of textbooks. All of them did promise to teach, though some proofed rather very disappointing on closer inspection.
This book on the other hand most certainly holds everything one can expect.
The book is divided into four parts: first, there is a small introction into the basics of astronomy, followed by a more in depth discussion of the solar system. The third part then covers stars and stellar evolution, while the final part is devoted to galaxies and cosmology.
The math required is minimal (i don't think the average high school graduate should have any problems), and a wealth of pictures and graphs, together with elaborate explanations in the text make sure, that this book will be a pleasure to learn from for the interested college student.
Every chapter (30 in all) ends with a short recapitulation of the most important concepts learned, a good number of review questions (to which the answers are supplied in the back of the book) and suggestions for further reading (books, magazines and weblinks).
The book comes also with a CD, on which there are further review tests to all chapters (of course with answers), as well as additional animations and much more.
As if that were not enough, there is a companion webside that offers additional tests and answers plus updated information, since after all, astronomy is progressing swiftly.
All in all, there cannot be much doubt that this is one of the best and most well rounded astronomy textbooks on the market. If you have to learn the basics of astronomy due to a course, or if you simply want to enrich your horizon, this book will make either task both easier and more enjoyable.

I'm the author of Universe w/ Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, and I thank Lonewolf Astronomer for pointing out Amazon's error in describing the book as a hardcover --- it is in fact a softcover. I've asked Amazon to change their description to reflect this, and they have done so.

Lonewolf Astronomer included a link to Universe: The Solar System w/Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, which is indeed cheaper than Universe. It is also quite a bit shorter, since it omits all of the chapters from Universe which concern stars, galaxies, and cosmology (Chapters 17-27).

Another abbreviated version of the book is Universe: Stars & Galaxies w/Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM, which includes all of the chapters from Universe on stars, galaxies, and cosmology but omits Chapters 9-15 on the solar system.

All three versions --- Universe, Universe: The Solar System, and Universe: Stars and Galaxies --- are available with the Starry Night Enthusiast CD-ROM.

Finally, in order to post this response, Amazon forced me to rate my own book. I hope the vast Amazon public will excuse the fact that I gave it five stars.

Thorough, deep, professional, concise, technically and scientifically accurate, but also, imaginative, filled with the wonder of discovery and learning. Beginning with the ancient origins of astronomical pursuits, the reader is taken through the unfolding world of space and time. The electromagnetic spectrum, light and optics, telescopes, planet and solar system formations, stars-their nature, galaxies, quasars, black holes, all of these wonders are explored. About the Author
A former intensive care nurse, Melanie Hemry traded in her stethoscope for a computer and now writes poignant true life stories, many of which are set in intensive care. A 1988 winner of the coveted Guideposts Writing Contest, Melanie's stories have warmed the hearts of readers around the world. She holds a bachelor of science in nursing from the University of Central Oklahoma and a master's degree in Practical Ministry from Wagner Leadership Institute in Colorado Springs. She is the author of A Healing Touch. Melanie and her husband, Ken, are the parents of two grown daughters, Heather and Lauren, and they reside in Edmond, Oklahoma.

A writer by trade and a minister at heart, Gina Lynnes has been a Bible teacher and associate pastor since 1996, ministering especially on the subject of prayer in churches both in the Unites States and abroad. A recipient of the National Religious Broadcasters award for her writing of the UpReach! An awesome book clearly created through God direction.

This book is absolutely awesome and speaks the truth about healing. I was in a conversation with an adult man and his mother who were
concerned about the man's older sister/mother's older daughter Lisa because Lisa's doctor told her she had a terminal disease and God started speaking messages to me to give to the both of them. He told me to tell them the doctor may have told Lisa this disease is terminal but he (God) did not say that and he then had me tell them about healing through the blood of Jesus and about this book. After passing on God's messages, God told me to go on Amazon and use what was left of a gift certificate I had to purchase this book and mail it to them. I did this right away, and they were in awe of the book and God's messages given through me to them. I personally have been healed through the teachings in this book and from what the mother told me, Lisa is doing much better.

About the Author
Robert Descharnes, a photographer and writer, has published studies of major artists, among them Antoni Gaudi and Auguste Rodin. Since 1950, he has been documenting and cataloguing Dali's paintings and writings, and is now considered the leading expert on the artist. Shortly before Dali's death, Descharnes was appointed by him to take charge of the rights to his works, within the Societe Demart Pro Arte B.V., of which Descharnes is president. Gilles Neret was an art historian, journalist, writer, and museum correspondent. He organized several art retrospectives in Japan and founded the SEIBU museum and the Wildenstein Gallery in Tokyo. He directed art reviews such as L'Oeil and Connaissance des Arts and received the Elie Faure Prize in 1981 for his publications. Neret is the editor of TASCHEN'S catalogues raisonnes of the works of Monet and Velazquez, as well as the author of Dali The Paintings and Erotica Universalis. He died on August 3, 2005.

All I can say is wow. Great book, beautiful illustrations of Dali's work. My daughter is a painter and I wanted to give her something she can admire and also tinker around on her canvas with Dali's inspiring paintings. Love this guy. : )

Wonderful art

Salvador Dali is one of the most profound painters from the surrealist era and this is by far my favorite and in my opinion the most accessible catalog of some of his best work!

Mostly harmless

An interesting read, but for the most part a harried chronicling of people and trends (mostly people) in a hyper dynamic space. A lot of Nobel laureate name dropping (to which, to their credit, they admit!). Has the feel of someone trying to get a book out there to take advantage of the thirst for new insight. Some good brain candy.

Would have expected a better "primer" on how block chain actually works. Given the audience this tome appears aimed at, a few paragraphs ("How this worldwide ledger works") seems a bit under-serving - particularly for such an avowedly history-changing paradigm. Readers must understand this thing before trusting it, which for the most part is mysterious and geeky. Demystification would help move blockchain out of the comfort zone of PhD's into the realm of the mere unwashed (in which this reviewer sits). And nothing on the mystery surrounding Satoshi himself - what's up with that? Given that we're dealing with a new trust paradigm, doesn't the fact of his anonymity (existence?) not at least merit some comment?

Only part I would recommend is found at Chapter 10 "Showstopper issues"... Ironic, of course but best analysis is here!

Excellent, clear & concise. I found this a great discussion about the possibilities of Blockchain. It covers present applications, and then takes the reader beyond the now into the realm of possibility! All the while based in realism, some ideas may flourish, some may fail. I recommend it to anyone wanting a foundational understanding of Blockchain.

The authors explain how the blockchain could be a force for good, improving the outcomes for millions of people

The most interesting, groundbreaking book I have read in years. This has got to be one of, if not the most, authorititive books out there on the blockchain. It does not focus on technical matters and can be read by a lay person not very familiar with how blockchain technology and cryptography work. Nor is it simply about Bitcoin (blockchains are about much more than Bitcoin). Less about how it works, than about how blockchain technology has the potential to transform the spheres of commerce, finance, management, public administration, politics, government and society in general (not to mention other applications). Must surely be compulsary reading for anyone wishing to explore how to create and exchange value, devise new business models and futureproofing in this age of information and big data. It is not however a book targeted only at e-commerce of financial services people. The authors explain how the blockchain could be a force for good, improving the outcomes for millions of people, particularly those in developing countries who are currently excluded from the financial system and the formal economy. They remind us of course that as with any other technology the blockchain is 'neutral', in that it is not inherently a 'good' or a 'bad' thing; it depends on how people choose to deploy it.

Truly an awesome quilting book!

I was looking for a good all-around book on quilting, that had basic tips and guidelines as well as a variety of projects. This book most definitely fits the bill!
It contains detailed sections on historical background, fabrics, techniques, tips, and has lots of full-color photographs that are very clear and easy to follow (not to mention gorgeously done).
The projects included are beautiful and unique, not your regular log cabin/flying geese quilt block fare. There are a number of different quilting styles explored that create some truly stunning items: clothing, home decorating, accessories, toys, linens, and more.
Many of the fun items are perfect for gift-giving (if you can bear to give them away and not keep them for yourself!). The book delves into the use of lots of other fabrics for quilting from silks to batiks, even PVC, so it's not just your granny's 100% cotton calicos any more!
I guarantee that just flipping through the book you'll find at least five projects that you'll want to get started with.
Best of all, it approaches all the projects with a very simple yet casual attitude, demystifying what appear to be impossible techniques and fabric usage, making "advanced" quilting accessible to crafters of all skill levels.
The book itself is not all that large, it's a smaller format overall and the pages are very sturdy and thick high-quality paper. However, despite its size, the sheer amount of information packed within it is truly enough to get anyone started or keep anyone interested. I like the size as it's easy to take with me and it fits well in the hand.
I own a lot of quilting books, some of them the size of a coffee-table book, and I have to say that this book is the one I constantly go back to, to look up information, get quick instructions on "how do I do this again?", find a project for a rainy day (or weekend, or week), or sometimes just to page through and wish I had an unlimited fabric budget.
If you get this book you will not be disappointed!

Don't waste you money!

I have read and or own hundreds of quilting books and this is the WORST I think I have ever seen. I'm not sure why the other reviewer gave it 5 stars unless she was trying to sell a copy. My copy will be donated to the thrift store as I won't inflict this book on someone else.

Problems:

1. This book is set in about a size 6 font. The print is so tiny that you will just about need a magnifying glass to read it.
2. The photos are also too tiny - the so called step by step type photos were usually about 1" x 1" or 1" by 1.5". Basically the size of a postage stamp, which means you can barely tell what they are trying to show you and forget about seeing the detail itself. It isn't there.
3. Details shots are not only small they are taken from too great a distance away that there is no detail seen.
4. Each project whether involved or simple gets one page of instruction including dinky pictures with about 4 steps to explain the steps of the project. If you are not already familiar with quilting there is no way you could use this book as a resource unless you can look at the one full-sized picture and figure out the detail from it. The full sized pictures are of course set up as an art shot so you never get a flat view of a quilt to see the patterns. Quilted projects such as bags and toys are also set up as art shots that may have something obscuring part of the project so you rarely see a complete picture of anything.
5. Almost all the patterns had to be enlarged including patterns that in a normal sized book would have been given at full-size. They want you to enlarge tiny 1" x 1" pieces to double (or greater) their size so not only will you be struggling to read the print, figure out missing instructions, you have to go around enlarging all pattern templates. This book doesn't make anything easy and they don't seem to use any 'modern' techniques such as strip piecing. If they do, I didn't see it.

This book is called the Ultimate Quilting and Patchwork Companion and quite frankly the authors over extended their capablities and the publishing company didn't help. Perhaps if the book was made full-sized with double the pages, larger photos, and more instructions, they may have been in the running to earn "the ultimate" about this book, but it is sadly lacking. I beg of you, unless you have eagle eye vision, leave this book on the shelf and find one that would actually be helpful to you!

A little disappointed...

I was hoping to find a quilting book with good projects for a beginner quilter. The projects are cute and appear to be easy. After attempting a couple of projects, I realized that there are holes in the directions, and assumptions that the person doing the project will "just know" what to do to fill in the gaps. The pictures aren't actually a guide, as you can't tell what's being done in them. I guess I'll just have to keep looking for a book that is actually good for a beginner!

On one side of the stone bulwark is England; on the other, Faerie. Once every nine years, the guard is relaxed so that the villagers can attend a fair held in a nearby meadow. There, as a young man, Dunstan Thorn is seduced by a strange woman, and not quite a year later a child is left at the wall. His name is Tristran Thorn. When he grows up, he falls in love with Victoria Forester, and to win her affection, he vows to bring to her the fallen star that they see one night. The star has fallen in Faerie, and though Tristran soon finds her (for in Faerie a star is not a ball of flaming gas, but a living, breathing woman), he has a hard time holding on to her. The sons of the Lord of Stormhold also seek the star, for it is said that he who finds her can take his father's throne. In addition, the oldest of three evil witches seeks the star, for her heart can grant youth and beauty. While the bones of the story?the hero, the quest, the maiden?are traditional, Gaiman offers a tale that is fresh and original. Though the plot begins with disparate threads, by the end they are all tied together and the picture is complete. An Amazing Modern Fairy Tale

Neil Gaiman's "Statdust" is a fairy tale for adults. Set in the last days of Victoria's reign, Tristan Thorn lives in the village of Wall, England and travels beyond the wall into the realm of Faerie to recover a fallen star for his beloved. Along the way, he encounters sky pirates, witches, murderous princes, and more. Those familiar with the film will find differences here, but Gaiman's writing evokes the best of classic fantasy and fairy tales, with characters and language both tragic and hopeful, ugly and beautiful, as befits the best stories. This gift edition contains art by Charles Vess that, coupled with its physical appearance, evokes the classic fairy tale volumes of the early twentieth century.

I am not sure what happened..

Stardust follows Tristan Thorn as he leaves his town and ventures into a magical realm beyond the wall. He is on a journey to collect a fallen star for his love interest..

I am going to start off by saying something I never thought I would say; I honestly enjoyed the film more than the book. Okay, you may now ostracize me. The story was a beautiful concept, and I am a huge fan of the author. I am also very fond of fantasy and enjoy reading the genre on a regular basis. I am by no means labeling this as a bad read. I did find it entertaining. I just wanted to enjoy this so much more than I was able to. I wanted to love this book. With a world full of magic and exotic creatures, I expected nonstop excitement, but somewhere along the line it just fell flat for me. It pains me to even type this. As I said, I really respect Neil Gaiman as an author.

I kept waiting for that moment when something within this story would really speak to me, but it never happened. You have a fallen star, witches, a unicorn, spirits, and no shortage of magic so this seems like the perfect recipe for an amazing tale of fantasy, and I know many who really believe it is. However, the end result left me desiring too much. I felt that the characters could have been built on more, and that overall the story just began to crawl.

I know many people may disagree with this review, and I do honestly recommend reading this book for yourself if you enjoy fantasy. It has the right elements. Maybe I missed something with this one. I am left unsure of just how I feel after finally having read this title.

Gaiman's Best Novel

I really think this is my favorite novel of Gaiman's. I think his comics are nothing less that works of art. I used to think he was mainly a comic book story teller. I say that with full appreciation and acknowledgement of comic books as an approach to story/literature that is fully valid as a work of art, and fascinating in its own right. I think Gaiman is one of the few comic book storytellers who have elevated the genre to this level of validity, in fact. But I've always been a bit disappointed by his novels. They are fun, fantasy worth reading and buying, even in hard-cover, so that's not something to sneeze at, but nothing like his comics, which are worth paying full price, and buying two - one to read, and one to put on your bookshelf for posterity.

Stardust is where Gaiman finds his novel footing, I feel. I think the 'fairy-tale' feel this novel has, with its unexpected and dreamlike plot and unexpected magic are just perfect for his wit and humor, as well as his playful mythological foundations. I LOVE fairy tales, and to read Gaiman's always interesting and playful rendition of an ancient genres felt in this case like a resurrection of this long forgotten form of story-telling. I left wanting more, and felt utterly transported to this new feel in fantasy that I only had a glimpse of through Grimm's fairy tales. I felt like I was experiencing what Grimm's fairy tales must have felt like to the listeners when such fairy tales were new!

I really hope he explores this approach to fantasy again, perhaps not a sequel, but this is the first novel of Gaiman's that I felt matched the quality and beauty that his Sandman comics captured.

A Unique and Good Read

I must begin with a disclaimer - Lou (Dr. Grivetti) and I have known each other since grade school and even shared some classes during our time at Berkeley; further, I provided some suggestions for The Song of Siwa (my particular copy was Lou's thank you). Those who know me know I am an avid reader. If I find some book wanting it is set aside - The Song of Siwa was not one of these. At any given time there are 3-4 books "working" on my night stand. The one I am enjoying most finds its way to the top of the stack. The Song of Siwa was one of these. Those I find an especially good read not only go to the top but I finish them before getting back to the rest of the stack. The Song of Siwa was one of these. I found the story both interesting and informative, its presentation as an epic preserved as a verbal tradition intriguing and the illustrations scattered through the text added to my enjoyment. In short The Song of Siwa proved to be one of my best reads and I strongly recommend this unique historical novel for your consideration. May you enjoy it as much as I.

The "Song of Siwa" was extremely interesting, captivating and well composed. The subject matter received excellent treatment in style, format and detail. The accompanying appendices provided ready access to queries as I read and were an invaluable addition.
I visited Egypt in 1980 on a business trip and since then its people, customs and limitless treasures have always fascinated me. This book will refresh memories for previous visitors and instill inquisitive thoughts to others who plan to visit Egypt in the future.
The Siwian people now have a "written jewel" to celebrate their legacy.

I usually stick to fictional stories, but since I fondly recall Professor Grivetti from UC Davis years ago, I decided to give his novel a go. I was pleasantly surprised with the reality and immediate feeling I was participating in each scene. The story is well-written, but why wouldn't it be...a professor wrote it, but with the passion and memories of someone who has been there, done that. Well done, Dr. Grivetti. Thanks for taking me on a journey I enjoyed.

Extremely intelligent and well written account of "spirit contact" throughout the ages.

Excellent book. Highly readable. Entertaining. What this book offers is not a grand theory of spirits and spirit contact so much as a secular overview of the evidence for humankind's involvement with the "spirit world" since its earliest beginnings through the present. Myself, I do not subscribe to any comprehensive theory as to whether spirits are real, or what their nature and goals might be, etc. But I deeply value books like this which draw together so much evidence with regard to spirit contact in all ages and explain and reflect on the evidence in simple and often elegant terms. The book is very well researched and very well documented and contains a lot of interesting references for further study in the field. I felt Brennan's criticism of the "skeptics" (those who discount the paranormal out of hand) were sound. The last few chapters of the book I found particularly intelligent and persuasive. But overall, it is an extremely ambitious and satisfying study. Highly recommended.

Wonderfully Readable Scholarly History of Spirits

W. H. Brennan's history of the effect of spirits on human civilization is a great read whether you personally believe in spirits or not. Impeccably researched and footnoted yet written with lively and even entertaining prose, Whisperers will hold the interest of even the most diehard skeptic.

Those of us who have been calling for a new, more comprehensive paradigm for Western knowledge for ages will be absolutely thrilled by this book.

In recent years, the tide has started to turn against the strident voices forever insisting that magic and spirits are bunk, pure and simple. What we take for granted is changing. Discoveries in quantum physics continue to open doors to other realities, and people are less reticent to share personal experiences and their own understanding of esoteric phenomena. Even if physicists still cringe when people they consider to be 'fringe' thinkers mention the 'q' word, even briefly, writers do it anyway, the point of being that, seriously, there really ARE 'more things in heaven and earth' than are dreamt in the old philosophy.

What really impressed me is that Brennan doesn't need the 'q' word at all in his history, so compelling are the facts, and so good is he at documenting them. The book is based on his University of Exeter master's thesis. An earlier, shorter version received the imprimatur of formal academia. This is no small matter, since in past years it has been next to impossible to write on such topics without ruining one's academic reputation or losing funding or tenure or both. Brennan makes the point that professional academics have all the same information he has, but the threat of career implosion prevents them from publicly reaching his conclusions.

This is a good enough reason to read the book all by itself, but an even better one is this:

If spirits are real, and spirit communication is real, and magic is real, and we refuse to look at any of it seriously or research if in any way, what does that make us? Sitting ducks I'd say, and if you aren't disturbed by Brennan's material on Nazism and its uses of the Occult, I just don't know what to say. I suppose you also park your car in Detroit and eat lunch meat made from pink slime, and that's your business, go ahead and keep it up, but for myself, I want to know more.

Brennan's news isn't all grim. Lots of positive and/or neutral things have come of spirit/human interaction too, and Brennan provides many historical anecdotes and resources. The healing arts, for example, may in fact have originated from spirit contact.

I have been slowly but surely putting together a collection of serious modern texts on spirits and related topics, and it is so encouraging to see more and more of them year after year. New paradigms begin this way: Failing to gain traction within traditional academia, (or gaining only a little on the outermost margins), some researchers, scientists, historians, and philosophers will go ahead and write their books anyway, pursue their ideas anyway, and before you know it, the old way has passed into the realm of phlogiston and leeches and Martian canals and the new way is already here.

Whisperers deserves a place of honor in this emerging library.

I can't wait to read what Brennan writes next.

Excellent sources

Contrary to A. Washburne's suggestion that Whisperers has `no sources, no cites' the book features a tightly-printed 8-page bibliography and some 426 end notes over 18 pages, all but a handful of which refer the reader to Brennan's sources for his central argument (which, incidentally, goes far beyond the John Brown story.)
