The beginning of a very good writer....

I happen to be a "true-blue" Deveraux fan. This book probably in it's day was excellent. It reminds me of the "Judith Michael" books or perhaps "Janet Dailey" the sweeping novels of the 80's. She describes a fictional place in New Mexico to a "T". What I did not like about this book was.... as someone mentioned the way it ended. There were some loose ends that were tied up but done so in the last 4 pages which gave me a "let-down" feeling. The characters were engaging but some things that happened in the book just didn't make much sense so I'm glad I have it to add to my collection but I would really like to caution someone if you are just purchasing it to add to your collection hold off and wait to get it at a reasonable price. Because in my opinion the story is not worth the price that I have seen on auctions.

It is, but it isn't Grand Deveraux Style.

I can tell this is one of her earlier works, perhaps written before The Enchanted land, but published after it. And finally having gotten hold of a copy, I can see why it was allowed to go out of print.

I'm glad to own a copy, and will probably never relinquish it, because I wanted the complete Deveraux collection, and this one marked its completion. However, I have to admit a serious disappointment, especially since I prefer her earlier works to her later ones.

To forewarn all the romance fans--this is not a romance. It's a grand story of a woman who grows up and discovers herself, and a fantastic tale of the business she starts, but overall, it's rather drawn-out and the conclusion seems anti-climactic.

Anyone who wants the complete collection should buy this, definitely, and even read it through, but I doubt it'll be a favorite.

I WAS LUCKY TO FIND THIS BOOK IN MY LOCAL LIBRARY. I HAVE READ ALL OF JUDE DEVERAUX'S BOOKS (22) I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR IT FOREVER. IT IS NOT HER USUAL STYLE, BUT I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH IT. AS A MATTER OF FACT, I HAD TO RATION IT OUT SO THAT I WOULD NOT RUSH THROUGH IT AND MISS SOMETHING. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK.

BEST BOOK EVER!!!!!! =)

Our names are ashley and sara! we are twins and we read this book because our aunt and our favorite cousin showed it to us. It made us think about our feelings and we felt good after reading it. our grandpa just passed away and this book made us feel better about our feelings made it eisier for us to talk about it. We think lots of kids should read it because it will make them better understand their feelings!Instead of five stars, we would give it a million if we could! Thanks so much Lauren Rubenstien for writing this awesome book! we hope everyone will enjoy it as much as we did!!!!!!!!

Sweet poetic read..... More than that only through adult guidance

Visiting Feelings is very aesthetic and inviting. The illustrations are bright, gender and ethnic inclusive, which definitely will hold children's attention.
About the content: The story line itself does not contain much educational information about feelings or how to express them... It is rather to be used as a tool to elicit feelings. (In the back, there are tips for adults on how to use the book: These are very useful)
Being a hospital chaplain, focused on child bereavement, I bought the book hoping to find a tool to help children express difficult feelings. I read it with my 12-year son using the language of the book to ask him how he felt inside. I was glad to see him interacting (he is very introverted) even thought the book seemed below his age bracket. Yet, I doubt he would have gotten much out of the book on his own.. .If the book is going to be more than a poetic sweet read for children, the parent must be proactive, lead the conversation, ask inviting questions using the language of the book....
In summary: A potential tool for conversation... And useful for visiting feeling only if guided by a parent or an adult

I like the book "Visiting Feelings" for many reasons. I like how it encourages you to imagine your feelings in a new way. I also enjoy it because it shows how to explore more in your feelings than usual. The book shows how to absorb your feelings and treat them with kindness. It is a great book for kids! Macy, age 10

"I have used this book since it was first published, with both undergrads & MBAs. It seems to be written at a level that is effective for both groups. I chose it because I know Dick and respect his research. I have kept using it because it is not too low level (as many texts are) and it also reflects accurately what is known in this field based on research, rather than what practitioners 'think' is good practice. Of necessity he summarizes some of the research findings rather briefly but usually the models and recommendations are based on empirical findings. I like that Daft also takes an applied focus and provides many examples."

"I very much like the explicit presentation of [the Managing by Design] questions as a launching point to in-class discussion. It would give the students something concrete to start with in terms of preparing for the session's discussion."

About the Author
Richard L. Daft, Ph.D., is the Brownlee O. Currey, Jr. Professor of Management and Principal Senior Lecturer in the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, where he specializes in the study of leadership and organization theory. Dr. Daft is a fellow of the Academy of Management and has served on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Journal of Management Education. He was associate editor-in-chief of Organization Science and associate editor of Administrative Science Quarterly. Dr. Daft has authored or co-authored 13 books, including The Executive and the Elephant, Organization Theory and Design, and Management. He also has authored dozens of scholarly articles, papers, and chapters, and he has published in the Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management; Accounting, Organizations and Society, Management Science, MIS Quarterly, and Organizational Behavior Teaching Review. Dr. Daft has received several government research grants in organization design, organizational innovation and change, strategy implementation, and organizational information processing. An active teacher and respected consultant, Dr. Daft has served as associate dean and helped manage a start-up enterprise. Expensive But Worth It

I bought this book for a class, and I did the deal where you buy the hard copy book and get the kindle version for $10. To do this, you just buy the hardcopy, and then after you check out, it will ask you if you want to buy the kindle version for $10.

I don't like to spend this kind of money on books, but I have to say it was well worth it. The book is very polished and extremely well-edited, so it makes learning important concepts (and preparing for class) very straightforward. If you absolutely can't afford the high price of this book (11th Edition), you may want to look for the 10th edition, which is much, much less expensive. I reviewed the 10th edition as well, and it is also very good. However, you will miss some of the recent case studies and other info that has been added in the 11th edition.

Very informative and easy to read.

I wouldn't normally write book reviews, but I found this book to be very informative without being dull. Had to purchase this book for a Master's course. Was skeptical at first, especially about the price. However, this book is written very well and Daft understands how to keep the reader engaged. Only issue is that the price is a little much, but most college books seem to be that way.

High quality, comprehensive coverage of organization theory

This book is easy to read, very informative and is well organized. Over the years I have encountered most of the organizational structures addressed in this book. What makes this book so valuable is the rationale for picking one structure over another, and how that structure helps or hinders in implementing your business strategy. Once you have gone through the material, the book makes for a great reference.

A Thorough Collection of Examples without Theory

If all you want is examples of various data structures and algorithms without all the boring theory, then you'll be happy with this book. It has about seventy examples of the most common structures and algorithms. All examples are in the C Language. Pointers and advanced language concepts are extensively used.

I've studied a few so far, and they do work, but they are only for educational purposes and not ready for commercial use. Most examples begin with a very short description and a very elementary diagram that shows the program logic followed with a list of steps that describe what the code does while it runs. Many examples, if not all, also have a list of steps describing the user input, processing, and program output. So far, I haven't found any pseudo code, which if done well, would have been better.

The book does have a downside, but is mostly due to formatting. The font for the code is in serif so it's too condensed; a very poor and naive choice. The line spacing is too large so the code spans too many pages; all the examples could have taken less than half the current space so that more of it could be seen at the same time. The diagrams and overall formatting of the book are at the level of an amateur.

The book has no index, but I don't think it would have provided any value.

If the downside does not turn you off, then the book is well worth the money.

All-Time Favorite Book

My all-time favorite book EVER.

Yes, it is a bit tough of a read-- jumping from flashback to flashback. In the first five chapters, there is only 1 comma used. (During my reread, I'm counting commas).

Yes, there is some violence, and sexual content. but honestly, it's a novel about war and the reality of its outcomes sometimes. Obviously, that stuff is going to be apparent.
In no way is it sugar-coated.

As a past Linguistics minor, I am in complete love with this book (not for the lack of commas, but that adds to it). Instead, for the pure imagery and way of writing.

Please do give it a shot. It is so worth a read. Get through it once, THEN make your overall decision about it. Do NOT sell this book short.

"Who is or was Dalton Trumbo you may well ask? Well, he was the writer behind some classic films including Spartacus and Papillon. He was also one of the many writers, directors and performers blacklisted by a paranoid regime in Hollywood during the 50s. He also wrote books.

Johnny Got His Gun was written shortly before the Second World War and is set during the First World War. Aka The Great War; Aka The War to End All Wars. But actually this isn’t really the setting, as the entire book is set inside one man’s head. One man who wakes up confused and has to work out from data (or, more often, lack of data) that he has lost both arms, both legs, his eyes, ears, nose and mouth. The book mingles dream-like memories of his bodied life with the coming to terms of being trapped inside his own new body.

It is written as a stream of (barely) consciousness, with very little punctuation to interrupt the thoughts. In fact I didn’t find a single comma in the whole 240 pages. It’s a much easier read than the lack of punctuation implies. However, the subject is NOT easy to digest.

The book brilliantly explores what happens to a mind isolated from the outside world except for a sense of touch, pain and of vibration. What happens? It has no choice but to think, to latch on to every piece of information it is lucky enough to get, and to be patient. What it can’t prevent is the slow drift towards a kind of frustrated mania obsessing about every idea it has. At points it is a great amplified description of what goes on in the mind of a writer, or other person who tends towards thinking rather than doing.

Johnny Got His Gun is a book against war, and even ends up being a pro-revolutionary polemic arguing for rising up against those who would send innocent young men and women off to be killed in the name of intangible ideas. But what other conclusion could the mind of a previously healthy twenty-year-old man come to, after finding that all that is left of him is his brain and his brain has almost no way to communicate with the outside world?

Towards the end of the book, Joe does find a way to communicate. But he has been trapped for so many years with only himself to talk to, that he sends out the same stream of consciousness that has been his monologue for years. His early patience has been replaced by a desperation. Even he can only conclude they think he has gone mad.

I loved this book. It was clever, insightful, inciteful, and gripping. A book against the terrors of war, without describing war very much. In fact most of the anecdotes about times at or near the battlefront were darkly amusing or even whimsical. The horror of war for Joe Bonham was not the actual war itself, but the terrible, isolated aftermath. And the fact that it should be allowed to happen at all.

At the end, you are feeling Joe’s desperation to be heard, but instead of the opening of a communication channel being his salvation, it is something other than that. We are left with the conclusion that to the outside world he seems mad and probably not worth continuing the communication with. Or even worth keeping alive.

This is an amazing book for its feat of taking you into a mind locked in that cruellest of cells – ones own practically dead body; tortured by that most evil of mental tortures – being allowed almost no sensory input and no movement; and having been put there by that most prolific dispenser of unjust punishment – War." -- Peter More

This should be required reading for every high schooler. As salient now as ever. Trumbo vividly lays out the cost of war at the basest of levels. Those who vote to send our troops to war should be required to have immediate family members serve in theatre. And folks that get multiple deferments should be precluded from sending others to war.

Good Things Come in Small Packages

It is a small book, but does contain up to date information clearly explained. I much prefer this to self-help books which are made longer with repetition and claims that the author's system is amazing, the most fantastic and excellent system.
In other words, short is better because you get the information instead of giving up on a repetitive annoying book.
