See this book. See this book make you crack up! Fun, fun, fun!

This book is hilarious. It not only skewers Dick and Jane reading primers quite nicely (though, let's face it, most kids would seize up with some of the longer words in this parody) but also pokes fun at the Original Series and many of its clich�s. It also was surprisingly substantial in its content, and is drawn well too. Fans who grew up with Star Trek will have a blast with it, and it was obviously done with love for the material and a tremendous sense of fun.

Love it- check it out!

Enjoyable, amusing, short.

My wife and I liked it. I read it aloud and the text worked well. The art is spot-on.

If the book had been a little longer I would have given it five stars.

Not already a Star Trek fan? You probably won't "get" it. Have a friend who is? This will make an excellent gift.

History of Scientific Instruments with a Philosphical Twist

When I saw the title I was excited. I wanted to know how the knowledge captured in instruments could be harnessed. This book gives concrete examples and details on how knowledge is captured in models and instruments. It is rather theoretical and philosophical. I covered chapters 1, 2, 6,and 10. The author brings together a wide array of histories of scientific instruments, as well as some theoretical approach to knowledge. However, none of this effort results in a coherent, useful perspective to deal with scientific knowledge.

For example, he covers MRI technology in detail. He shows that no single segment of the MRI community has all the information. Adjusting anisotropic pixels for time savings resulted in misdiagnoses by doctors. If anything, this shows that the knowledge captured in the MRI machines is either incomplete or hard to access. I would argue that inaccessible knowledge is no knowledge at all. This "thing knowledge" idea was interesting but disappointing. (If I'm mistaken and there's utility in this book, please show me how; I would be delighted to find out that the past hour of my life was spent usefully). The main message seems to be that if you want to tweak the machine, check the other stakeholders to make sure you're not screwing something up in the process. Or at least tweak it back after you're done.

The author also seems to like to talk about gift economies vs commodity economies. Basically, "gift economies good, commodity economies bad." He goes to some lengths to talk about this, so there may be merit in this. However, I skipped it because I didn't see how this was relevant to my honing my skills to be a better scientist.

If you want to read up on scientific instrumentations and bring this stuff up in a dinner conversation with your fellow scientists, then it would make for interesting talk. If you want to understand how to harness all that wonderful thing knowledge in your HPLC, you should read the HPLC manual.

I had wanted to tell this story for many years. One of the key players in the story - Ilmor's Paul Morgan - was tragically killed in 2001 while piloting an historic WWII plane. I believed most of the story had died with him, but with the help and encouragement of Paul's son Patrick, I was inspired in the summer of 2013 to finally put the details together. I spent much of the second half of '13 in the US and the UK, researching the archives and interviewing nearly all of the key players.
It was a brilliant effort from so many to bring the engine to life - and I pushed everyday to write a book that honored their hard work and also be a compelling, intensive true mystery story for the reader.�I hope you enjoy it.Jade Gurss

Jade Gurss is the co-author of two New York Times Best Selling books. Driver #8 (Warner Books) chronicles Earnhardt Jr s rookie season. It is believed to be the most successful book about auto racing in American publishing history, spending 17 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. He also co-wrote DW: A Lifetime Going Around in Circles (Putnam Books), which reached the New York Times Best Seller non-fiction list in February 2004.

You will RIP through this.

I was not only a CART racing fan, huge Al Jr fan, and a motor-head, but I was also a machine designer back in the day, coming up with (CAD or hand-drawn) concepts but then reverting to dry ice, heat, weird materials, etc, to solve problems. All the technical stuff TOTALLY resonated

This book was perfect. The author was obviously passionate, and that shouldn't be taken for granted - not all works come across as a real labor of love, as this did.

If you love engineering, and/or love racing, especially open-wheel racing, this book is an absolute MUST-read.

Fantastic read! Great telling of a story about achieving the impossible through sheer determination and grit.

As an engineer and motorsports fan I found this story very compelling. It's technical and dramatic. I knew of the special Mercedes/Illmor/Penske Pushrod Indy engine, but this story paints the whole picture in vivid detail.

I'm now inspired to reach higher and work harder to achieve things I previously though we're impossible.

"The Beast" is a well written, suspenseful, & very interesting book. Guess reveals great insight into the "Penske Machine" and the politics of Indy. This book has me interested in Open Wheel Racing once again. However, I would not recommend this book to anyone not familiar with the basic principles of the internal combustion engine.

About the Author
Costel Puscoiu was born on August 29, 1951, in Bucharest Romania. He studied at and graduated from the Ciprian Porumbescu College of Music in Bucharest, majoring in Composition and Theory. In Romania he worked as a music teacher, and for some years he was a conductor and researcher at the Institute for Ethnology and Folklore in Bucharest. He was also a member of the Society of Romanian Composers. His compositions include symphonic music (symphonies, cantatas, and a concerto for viola), chamber music (string quartets, a sonata for clarinet and piano, contemporary pieces for several ensembles, music for pan flute), choir pieces, and film scores. His compositions are often influenced by Romanian folklore and Byzantine liturgies. He has also contributed to several musicological and folkloric studies and articles. In September of 1982 Puscoiu moved to the Netherlands from his native Romania. He is now working in the Music School department as a pan flute teacher and a leader of an orchestra at the Free Academy Westvest in Delft. He has also become a member of the Dutch Composers Association.

Very useful for players who want to progress

I have found this book just perfect for my needs. The best part of this book is that the pieces are arranged brilliantly so that as you work your way through the book, you are systematically challenged by more difficult tunes and notes in the higher register almost without knowing it. I love the tunes and the variety of composers. The man who arranged the pieces must really know the recorder and what constitutes increasing difficulty for the player. I have not one complaint -- which is unusual for me!

This book was just what I wanted. If you like classical music you will like it. There are well known composers such as Mozart, Haydn, and Vivaldi as well as those not so well known. This book is a must for beginners as well as more advanced recorder players.

As what I would say a decent above beginner but not expert recorder player I found this book helpful. It most from easy to advanced in difficulties and was challenging at the end. would recommend this for recorder players who want to move beyond being a beginner to a new level of play

Bianca Scholten is a partner at Ordina, one of the largest publicly traded consultancy service providers in the Netherlands and Belgium in the areas of information and communication technology and management. She was the driving force behind the inception of the Ordina ISA-95 & MES Competence Center. Ms. Scholten advises national and international industrial companies on how to determine their manufacturing automation strategies. She has trained hundreds of professionals in applying ISA-95, mostly in Europe. Ms. Scholten is an active member of the SP95 committee. She publishes regularly in trade journals and frequently speaks at conferences on subjects related to vertical integration and technical automation. In addition to these areas of expertise, Ms. Scholten is also an art historian. She received her Masters degree from the University of Utrecht, the Netherlands, in 1993.

A practical method from a stuffy standard

This is not a regurgitation of the S95 standard, a very dry and difficult set of documents to engage. The author is very thoughtful and considerate to hand over a practical methodology based on the S95. She is specific about the approach beginning with understanding business drivers, capturing user requirements, how to apply the S95 models and use the terminology properly, etc. The detailed movement of data between various system layers is addressed adequately so that you will understand the context if it is your first project, or a confirmation if you have been doing this type of work for almost two decades as I have. If you've never integrated a business planning system there is some missing context that is really outside of the scope of this book. Also, it is helpful if you have at least some experience with object-oriented analysis and a simple understanding of UML. The writing style is fluid, well organized and easy to read.

Some of the most important standards developed by ISA in the last decade are the ISA-95 standards on integration between control systems and enterprise systems. ISA-95 part 1 was published in 2000. It took many years before the any books on implementing the standard appeared. One of the first is Bianca Scholten's The Road to Integration: A Guide to Applying the ISA-95 Standard in Manufacturing. Scholten is a partner at Ordina, an information and communication technology consulting firm in the Netherlands and Belgium. She received her Master's degree from the University of Utrecht and is an active member of the ISA-95 committee.

Scholten first provides some background on ISA-95, which may be somewhat of a mystery to many readers. ISA-95, Enterprise-Control System Integration is divided into several parts. Part 1, Models and Terminology provides the common language for integration and the very important functional hierarchy model, which shows level 0,1, and 2 functions, including the process and control systems as described in ISA-88, the level 3 functions of manufacturing operations and control, and the level 4 functions of business planning and logistics. The focus of ISA-95 is the exchange of data between levels 3 and 4. The functional enterprise control model other models are also very important. Part 2, Object Model Attributes defines more details of the information flows shown in part 1. Part 3, Activity Models of Manufacturing Operations Management describes the activities at level 3. Part 4, Object Models and Attributes on Manufacturing Operations Management is in development and defines the information exchange between level 3 systems. Part 5, Business to Manufacturing Transactions, describes the data messages exchanged in transactions between levels 3 and 4.

After the orientation to the ISA-95 standards, Scholten illustrates how to use the ISA-95 standards as a methodology to analyze existing system interfaces. The process includes a tour, a review of business drivers, and then an examination of the functional and activity models, during which the specific needs are defined. A summary with concerns and recommendations complete the analysis. Scholten provides comments from users that have been through the analysis.

Another chapter explains how to apply the models described in the ISA-95 standards from a practical point of view. A detailed example includes the resources of personnel, equipment, material, and process segment and illustrates many points.

The final chapter reveals the structure of B2MML (Business to Manufacturing Markup Language) and its implementation, including adaptors and middleware. There is also a plan for implementing a project to implement ISA-95. There are some critical questions to answer, like ownership of the master data and the interface systems.

Scholten provides an experienced view of the benefits of following the ISA-95 standards and, importantly, an international view. She draws upon many interviews with users to keep the book grounded in realty. Scholten also adds her own style as an art historian. The ISA-95 standards will have a very significant impact on the control system environment so this practical explanation is worth buying (BBBB).

A feud between Peppi's after-school art club and Jaime's science club springs up. Can the two groups stop fighting long enough to earn a spot in the school fair? Will Peppi overcome her social anxiety and apologize to Jaime? Will any of them feel comfortable enough in their own skins to have a good school year? The story is told with a clear, believable voice. Diversity is reflected in this average middle school setting, and there are characters from a variety of ethnicities and are differently abled. Chmakova is an adept storyteller and organically incorporates messages of kindness and understanding without being preachy. The placement of the text and images were carefully considered. The illustrations and lettering are playful, bright, and fun, in keeping with the tone of the work. Readers will connect with the relatable, complex characters. About the Author
Svetlana Chmakova was born and raised in Russia until the age of 16, when her family emigrated to Canada. She quickly made a name for herself with works like Dramacon, Nightschool, the manga adaptation of James Patterson's Witch & Wizard, and the webcomic Chasing Rainbows. She graduated from Sheridan College with a three-year Classical Animation Diploma. Her latest work for middle grade readers, Awkward, has been a runaway critical success and was named one of YALSA's 2016 Top Ten Great Graphic Novels for Teens!

Awkward is Awesome

I bought this book for my 11 year old daughter and she loved it. I asked her to write a review and this is what she wrote. "Awkward is awesome! I'm in sixth grade and I've just started a new school, so I can totally relate to the beginning.I really love the story-line and the character growth between Penelope and Jamie. Also the relationship between the art club and the science club is so funny! So basically what I'm here to say is I love this book and recommend it to anyone who likes graphic novels with a bit of comedy!"

Great art and storytelling

'Awkward' revolves around two interwoven plot points about Penelope trying to help her Art Club get a spot in the school fair and her desire to apologize to the school mate she shoved, where she gets shy and embarrassed to every time she gets the opportunity. The opening seems like it'll lead to a romance, but there are only a hints of it in the story and when present it's very subtle with some aspects of innocence involved (they're all in middle school after all)

There's a great cast of characters with realistic yet cartoony aspects to them without going to deep into their respective stereotypes.

The book goes into middle school drama, and with real life personal problems as well especially with a character named Maribella. With how her story arc concluded, I would like to see her getting her own series about her exploits as I found her to be an interesting character.

The book is in full color and I like how the characters emote very well with their facial animations as it brings the art and world to life. This book is very character driven and brings out excellent interactions with a variety of different personalities. A very good page turner as I read all 200+ pages in one sitting.

Overall very good, fun filled middle school drama story. A good read for all ages.

If the author is reading this, please make a series on Maribella ;)

Graphic Novel Librarian's Review

As a graphic novel librarian, I absolutely had to own this book. Not only is it written and drawn by a very talented author, but it's a great take on teen awkwardness that my patrons really need. This is destined to be on ALL the American Library Association booklists and win all sorts of awards. It's great for teens, tweens, and adults. It somehow managed to tell the story without succumbing to tropes and without talking down to the reader. It really made me feel like the author LIVED this situation and is telling us exactly how it felt, not how her editor told her to make it feel so it would sell better.

Peppi is a young girl who doesn't fit anywhere except her art club. Her first day of school she embarrasses herself and ends up hurting the feelings of the nerdiest kid in school. This boy, Jamie, ends up joining the art club's arch-rival the science club. As the club's duke it out in the halls, Peppi and Jamie duke it out on the emotional level, both learning to come out of their shells and save their beloved clubs from cancellation.

What else can I say? The art is beautiful. The characters are beautiful. The situation is beautiful. The humor is beautiful. Why are you still reading this when you could read the book?
