About the Author
Guadalupe Valdes is a Professor of Spanish and Portuguese and Professor of Education at Stanford University. She works in the areas of Socio-linguistics and Applied Linguistics, and has published numerous articles in one of her concentrations, the teaching of Spanish to both monolingual speakers of English and bilingual Hispanics. Professor Valdes is the author of four Spanish-language textbooks, two of which focus on teaching Spanish to bilingual Hispanics. She served as a member of the editorial boards of several journals, including Modern Language Journal, Bilingual Review, and Hispanic Journal of the Behavioral Sciences.

Educating Parents

Finally! Finally we have an ethnographer who is able, or maybe just willing, to research the heart of the matter. Why do immigrant children have problems assimilating; why are they less likely to go to class; why are they less likely to graduate; why do they feel marginalized? Guadalupe Valdes attempts to answer these questions in her book Con Respeto by interviewing and observing the lives of ten mexican-american families. Similar ethnographies have focused on the school environment --- what are these immigrant children experiencing at school that would cause them to be marginalized the way they are? Valdes, who still looks at the school environment, spends the majority of her time examining the families of the immigrant students, and what their home life consists of. This deeper examination proves very fruitful by clearing up possible misconceptions one could have walked away with after reading books like Jocks and Burnouts, Gender Play, and Made in America. Are the parents responsible for the triumphs, and in many cases, the failures of their children in school? Valdes would say, yes, but only partially. The schools, Valdes feels, could still do more, or at least communicate more effectively with the parents.
What can be done to make the learning experiences of these immigrant children more pleasant and more fruitful? Until now, the majority of literature has focused on what the school could do differently in terms of how they could better teach these children. Strategies have been mentioned like better understanding of the children's needs, or better understanding of the children's culture, or more money and resources for materials designed to use the child's own culture as a basis of the curriculum. Valdes, on the other hand, makes a strong case that maybe the parents should be given a better understanding as to why education is important in the first place, thus empowering them to help their own children succeed at school.
Throughout Con Respeto, Valdes illustrates how the relationship between the parent and child could develop into one that is discouraging to the child's education. She states that even though the families recognize that school is important they often do not know why. She shows that as a result, these parents could send mixed signals to their children and actually hamper their education. She also shows how parents might become fearful of the education their children are getting: will my children some day leave me, will my children stop respecting me, will they think I'm dumb. These beliefs by parents could also be harmful to a child's education.
As to what should be done, the issue still seems somewhat uncertain. There are plenty of good arguments for government intervention and for the "changing of families," as Valdes put it. There are also plenty of good arguments for the flip side: leave the families alone, or at least, don't intervene, which, by the way, Valdes acknowledges as very important. Valdes makes it clear, in her final chapter, that she supports neither side fully, and that what should be done is uncertain -- perhaps, Valdes reveals, people should just understand what these families are going through.

Aztec history lovers, this is for you

I learned more about the Mexica worldview from living with eight Mexican families, through this book, than from all the old codices combined. The little precolumbian homilies children got in Tenochtitlan--little rules for living that created respectful, self-respecting children--they go by a different name but remain unchanged! Here in California half of all children are born to Mexican parents. The Catholic/Aztecan patriarchy does not mix with the go-it-alone Yankee work-ethic, period. For example: To move away from your family for a better-paying job is to fail miserably. What are material possessions if your children's grandparents are so far away?

That alone helps explain Mexican poverty, but how rich they are in other ways! The author doesn't offer a solution to this culture shock. The solution is clearly up to us, and we can learn so much from each other!

One of my son's teachers used to be a prosecuting attorney (she even looks like Marcia Clark), and she teaches 10-year-olds how to debate by playing devil's advocate herself--the pupil is emotionally in the witness box. How is a child who was taught by age three NEVER to interrupt an adult supposed to summon the courage to raise his or her hand, let alone sharply disagree with a teacher? We could make it clearer to them that there will be times to speak out as adults, and school is practice for that, in a safe environment. We can also learn something from Mexicans about how to raise polite, courteous children.

The author could not, for the life of her, make the concept of feminism understood. "But my husband works as hard as I do!" was all the women could say. The marriages are rock-solid because husband and wife respect and depend on each other. (Where's the famous wife-beating? I've read elsewhere that in Mexico highly educated men are far more likely to abuse their wives, because in a patriarchy a man's reputation is dependent upon the behavior of his family, and the higher the position, the more a man has to lose. Different world!)

What a great way to understand Mexico and the people we share the continent with. Thanks to this book, if I get something home from school that I, a native speaker of English with a college education, find absurd or incomprehensible, I go on the warpath for the sake of the Hispanic families in town. A state-wide, sex-and-drugs questionaire PERMISSION SLIP policy was changed through a direct request from me. I keep buying used copies of Con Respeto to give away to principals and teachers.

Excellent work for a changing country, Dr. Valdes. A popular version, with more from the husbands and more photographs, would easily become a 5-star best-seller.

Global approaches to health began to be conceived as rich nations embarked on the exploration and colonization of poor nations in the tropics. For much of the first half of the 20th century, these approaches were focused on gaining an understanding of the pathophysiology of infectious diseases endemic to warmer climates and devising the means to cure them. In the latter half of the 20th century, the use of airplanes increased international travel, allowing the import and export of various infectious agents with increasing ease. Other factors contributing to the spread of disease were the mass migrations caused by war, civil strife, hunger, and natural disasters. Such migration has influenced the changing face of global health. The past century also witnessed the industrialization of previously nonindustrial countries and the globalization of trade. In some regions, these trends have led to economic improvement, the control of many infectious diseases, and a shift toward a focus on chronic diseases. But these epidemiologic transitions have also drastically affected some countries by requiring less sophisticated societies to face modern health challenges. Global health today has a much different face from the one it had in 1902, when Sir Ronald Ross won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his work linking malaria and mosquitoes. Today, the field of global health encompasses infectious and chronic diseases, environmental and occupational health, injury prevention, war, and hunger, as well as research and the implementation of health care programs. And it involves politics. In order to achieve success in combatting poor health, the international community has come to appreciate the need for partnerships, both among countries and international organizations and between public agencies and private industry. In Critical Issues in Global Health, Koop, Pearson, and Schwarz have assembled contributions by prestigious leaders in the area of public health who here share their insights into what they see as the most pressing issues in global health. The editors have grouped the essays into three main parts, covering countries, continents, and the world; organizational landscapes in global health; and organizations, management, leadership, and partnerships. The relatively short chapters address past successes, current challenges, and possible future advances in public health. The first essay, by Gro Harlem Bruntland, the former director general of the World Health Organization, establishes the tenor of the book. Bruntland points to the tremendous gains in life expectancy that were made over the past few decades; however, she also points out that severe poverty hinders more than a billion people from reaping the rewards of the "health revolution." Bruntland lists four challenges for the 21st century: "first and foremost," a reduction in poverty; second, the need to address threats that arise from economic crises, unhealthful environments, and risky behavior; third, the development of effective health care systems; and, fourth, the expansion of the knowledge base related to health. Throughout subsequent chapters, after discussing experiences with various topics in health care, the contributors delve into areas that, in essence, revisit these four challenges. Critical Issues in Global Health is an excellent overview for those with an interest in improving global health. It is expansive in its coverage, which is both a strength and a weakness. Although the book provides an overview of many important topics in global health, each chapter is only that, an overview. Readers will use the book as an introduction to the subject of global health, but they will need to search for other works that provide more coverage in depth. The pressing health issues of today are covered, but the challenge is to predict what influences -- the severe acute respiratory syndrome is a recent example -- will affect the world's health in the future. However, recently implemented Quality by Design (QbD) concepts have lead to greater application of modeling in commercial process development and manufacture of protein and peptide separations systems.

Skillfully fuses learning the higher frets and challenging pieces

Very useful for the advanced beginner/mid level student in learning to read the higher fret notes. Excellent scaler exercises along with pieces, some a bit difficult others just challenging enough to provide the stimuli needed to bridge the gap between beginner and total sophisticate.

I am practicing through Noad's solo guitar playing, wanted to get more position-focused experience, so bought this book and couple of other books in this line.
1. The book has some pieces for each position, though most pieces also have shifting to other (lower) positions too; for example, pieces for third position are played in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd position, not only the 3rd, so you have to play lots of 1st and 2nd positions in the piece to get some exposure to the 3rd position.
2. The book does not have any instructions or hints as to how to play the piece.
3. There is left-hand fingering for every single note on every single piece in the book; I preferred if it had fingerings on the first piece for each position to help you learn, then less fingerings on next pieces to encourage you to find out yourself; with fingering above all notes, the eyes tend to look at the number rather than the note.

Overall, this is just an okay book, nothing special.

I also bought a book by Roger Filiberto (Mel Bay's Deluxe Guitar Position Studies), which in comparison I think is a better book. It has more musics, does not provide fingering over all the notes (but only the first pieces for learning) and also explains some stuff about scales played in each position which I think is kind of good to know.

I recommend the Filiberto's book over this one.

This is a pretty good book

This is a pretty good book. It seems to be focused towards the already skilled painter. I have just started in digital illustration and concepts so it can be confusing at times. Often it'll say things like "Refine your painting" which is an empty statement to new people. It shows step by step methods for various kinds of mechanical/futuristic things with instructions worded to allow the artist to create unique pieces. Good for both the digital illustrator and the old fashioned illustrator.

3013:Targeted by Susan Hayes is a great addition to the 3013:The Series books. I love how she brings strong characters and great story telling together to make an unforgettable read.
Hawke Summers isn’t very diplomatic, he isn’t a fan of small spaces and been known to play mercenary between jobs. He has the flair for the dramatic. Maverick personality.
Brandt is Hawke’s brother of the heart. They are very close friends. He wants to settle down, have a family. He is organized the administrative type. The perfect foil to Hawke’s more impulsive personality. He wants something for them, not just a pay check but a life.
T’Karra she owns her own bar, aptly named The Black Hole. She has a great rep for great food and service. She is a tough as nails girl who does not take crap from anyone.
I really liked T’Karra a lot she is strong yet vulnerable. She really needs the two men in her life as much as they will turn out needing her too. I liked that balance of power in the book. Made all three essential characters.
Over all this has a lot of story inside this book as well as a hot hot hot romance that will keep you turning the pages. This book is part of a series but can be read as a standalone without too much trouble.
If you like m�nage, romance, and great space stories this series is the one to pick up. You will find someone to fall in love with for sure, I know I did.

I've been a fan of the 3013 series since its beginning, and with each book this series just keeps getting better and better. Author Susan Hayes has written a wonderfully crafted story, which centers around one of the peripheral characters in the previous book of the series. The heroine T'Karra is a pack leader of a group of Krytos, a warrior race whose home was destroyed by the same bad aliens who attacked Earth. She's written as a very feisty, independent woman, who is trying to find out who betrayed her pack in the last book. The two commanders, Hawke and Brandt who come to the X-2 station to find out what is happening and to straighten out the station were written as great alpha individuals, but with a bit of humor as the two of them snark at each other a lot. The three of them fall for each other, while trying to solve the crime, and our heroes want to keep the independent woman as their chosen. If you want to find out more, buy this book! It's amazing and very entertaining.

Amazing... I love the fact that I can add this to my favorites list. The series just keeps getting better and better. Targeted was right up there with my fav Sci-Fi reads and glad that it was part of this awesome series.
Its an easy read that flows well and its just about the right length. Not too much detail to bog you down, but enough that keeps the reader interested. The characters are awesome, I loved T’karra’s brothers.
Hawke a alliance commander was “undercover” for a very short time..when he and his partner arrived on their new station. Hawke is more verbal and quick to react, where as Brandt is more the thinker of the two. But they both come together in agreement when they spend just a little time in T’karra’s presence.
T’karra is a Krytos female and leader of her pack, you may remember her from book 4 Stowaway. She kicks but and takes names and will never justify her actions to anyone. At her age she should be mated but she isn’t to the consternation of her brothers. For T’karra she has more than earned her freedom and right to lead and isn’t about to give that up to be mated.
I cant find anything negative to say about this book, Ms.Hayes nailed it...with her talent to weave a spell the word play, the bit of mystery and danger and more than sizzling scenes that make you want to fan your face. I am glad that I was able to read this and do recommend it to anyone that has a love for Science Fiction. Enjoy
