A Love For Life, by Jane McGrath, Glenn McGrath

A love story that will break your heart.

Jane Steele had been in a relationship with Australian Test cricketer Glenn McGrath for less than two years when, at age 31, to her horror and disbelief she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She didn't want to burden him, and offered to end the relationship and return to England to face the problem alone. He wouldn't have a bar of it---he was sticking by her no matter what.

Together they battled the fear, the despair and the cancer. Jane had a mastectomy and then underwent gruelling chemotherapy. Through it all, Glenn was by her side. Together, they beat the cancer, this time at least. This, and their marriage, would have been happy ending enough but then, despite being told the chemotherapy could make her infertile, Jane discovered she was pregnant. Jane and Glenn welcomed baby James into their life.

The alternating his 'n hers chapters take the reader right into the heart of this story. Jane and Glenn wrote frankly of their fears and worries (including such things as the fact that Jane might not survive, and how each felt about her body after surgery) and inspiringly of their devotion and their dedication to beating this disease. There are surprising laughs throughout the book (for instance they each have different memories of their courting days!) as well as deeply moving passages. This is a wonderful celebration of life and love.

Sustainability in Higher Education: Stories and Strategies for Transformation (Urban and Industrial Environments), by Peggy F. Barlett, Ge

In colleges and universities across the United States, students, faculty, and staff are forging new paths to sustainability. From private liberal arts colleges to major research institutions to community colleges, sustainability concerns are being integrated into curricula, policies, and programs. New divisions, degree programs, and courses of study cross traditional disciplinary boundaries; Sustainability Councils become part of campus governance; and new sustainability issues link to historic social and educational missions. In this book, leaders from twenty-four colleges and universities offer their stories of institutional and personal transformation. These stories document both the power of leadership -- whether by college presidents, faculty, staff, or student activists -- and the potential for institutions to redefine themselves. Chapters recount, among other things, how inclusive campus governance helped mobilize students at the University of South Carolina; how a course at the Menominee Nation's tribal college linked sustainability and traditional knowledge; how the president of Furman University convinced a conservative campus community to make sustainability a strategic priority; how students at San Diego State University built sustainability into future governance while financing a LEED platinum-certified student center; and how sustainability transformed pedagogy in a lecture class at Penn State. As this book makes clear, there are many paths to sustainability in higher education. These stories offer a snapshot of what has been accomplished and a roadmap to what is possible.Colleges and Universities covered include Arizona State University • Central College, Iowa • College of the Menominee Nation, Wisconsin • Curriculum for the Bio-region Project, Pacific Northwest • Drury University, Missouri • Emory University, Georgia • Florida A&M University • Furman University, South Carolina • Green Mountain College, Vermont • Kap'olani Community College, Honolulu, Hawaii • Pennsylvania State University •San Diego State University • Santa Clara University, California • Slippery Rock State University, Pennsylvania • Spelman College, Georgia • Unity College, Maine • University of Hawaii--Manoa • University of Michigan • University of South Carolina • University of South Florida • University of Wisconsin--Oshkosh • Warren Wilson College, North Carolina • Yale University

Review

Stories from a growing revolution that is transforming campus operations and curriculum in higher education, told by intrepid and creative educators at the forefront. A must-read for administrators, faculty, students, and everyone interested in education.

(David W. Orr, Oberlin College)

From among the diverse and flourishing efforts all across the US to embody sustainability in higher education, Barlett and Chase have again demonstrated that they have an uncanny ability to identify, coax, and pluck the sweetest and juiciest examples. Whether reflecting back on personal growth as an instructor or recounting the ways students were able to make community-wide shifts in just a couple of years that had eluded other leaders for decades, the book's enthralling series of first-person narratives document the next phase of transformation, from pedagogical, to technical, to cultural.

(L. Julian Keniry, co-founder of National Wildlife Federation's Campus Ecology Program; author of Ecodemia and other publications)

Every 100 years or so, American colleges and universities begin a morphing process. These institutions have morphed from colonial colleges to universities, from local teaching academies to universities, or from colleges without degree programs to organized centers for advanced learning with many subjects being taught. Here in the twenty-first century, a new transformation has begun. Colleges and universities of all types, sizes, and histories are advancing a new integrated learning focus on sustainability. This new focus, built around a value outcome rather than a science outcome only, is well outlined in this reader and is critical for all designers of our teaching, learning, and discovery enterprises to consider as they prepare the next generations for the complexities that we will all face as we attempt to build a more sustainable future.

(Michael M. Crow, President, Arizona State University)

This work will appeal to environmentalists and educators looking for leadership examples of passionate engagement along with analysis and careful academic planning.

Review
"A concise, low-cost updated documentary study of the man, his life and thought.... There is a solid index and thirty-four evocative photos to enhance the text." -- The International Journal of African Historical Studies

"A useful addition to both public and college libraries." -- Library Journal

"A useful introduction to Mandela's life and work through his speeches and writing." -- Los Angeles Times/The Book Review

"Perhaps the most riveting and revealing documents are the transcripts of Mandela's trials.... They give the reader a better understanding of Pretoria's fear of Nelson Mandela." -- Christian Science Monitor

"Reveals the patience, thoughtfulness and wisdom of the man who is the real leader of South Africa.... Especially valuable for the insights into his character and the character of those fighting for freedom in South Africa...." -- Alice Walker, Pulitzer Prize winner, author of The Color Purple

"Those who prefer abstractions or empty phrases, or fanciful--supposedly political-- ideas, would do best to avoid this book, because Nelson Mandela is not a Quixotic fighter of windmills and imaginary monsters but a man who is fighting the bitter reality of the apartheid monster that is destroying the essence of his own beloved people, in the same way that colonialism is destroying the essence of my own people. In this book we meet an idealist with his feet firmly planted in the earth." -- Rafael Cancel Miranda

Mandela, Speeches and Writings,1944-1990
By Marc Lichtman
This includes all the major speeches and writings of Nelson Mandela, from the formation of the ANC Youth League through his release. You can see in it Mandela's development from an African nationalist, suspicious of communism, and seeing little in common between Africans and the other oppressed peoples ("Coloureds" and Indians), much less whites, into an internationalist, strongly influenced by Marxism. It includes Mandela's testimony at his trials, in which he attempted to put the government on trial. It includes accounts of Mandela on Robben Island by two other prisoners. Then it has his correspondence with the government, requesting to meet and negotiate. Timing is everything: the South African Army had been beaten back from Angola (by combined Cuban, Angolan, and SWAPO forces), and forced to accept independence for Namibia. The mass movement had taken on the form of massive demonstrations and political strikes. In this context, approaching the government for negotiations was the correct move.

It includes the first four speeches Mandela gave upon his release, showing that his plan was not simply to negotiate, but to "intensify the struggle." This is quite important, since the movie version of Nelson Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, in contrast to Long Walk to Freedom: The Autobiography of Nelson Mandela, makes it look like Mandela viewed the mass movement as an obstacle to negotiations. For those who want to follow up on the further speeches of Mandela in the struggle, I suggest Nelson Mandela Speaks: Forging a Democratic, Nonracial South Africa.

On the role of Cuba, and Mandela's view on it see How Far We Slaves Have Come! South Africa and Cuba in Today's World and Cuba and Angola: Fighting for Africa's Freedom and Our Own.

Classic essays and speeches
By Andre M.
Lovers of good political writing will enjoy this. I was greatly inspired by the first edition of this while I was a college student in the 1980s (when Mr. Mandela was still imprisoned).

Among the highlights are "Bantu Education" (1950s), a look at how the educational system for Black South Africans was designed to produce a class of cheap labor (as a Black South Carolinian, I can relate). Mandela's court speech prior to his imprisonment in 1964 reads like a South African "I Have A Dream" as he eloquently states the case of Black S/Africans and his willingness to be a martyr for that cause. (Check the actual sound recording of this on the CD "The Voice of Nelson Mandela" for the full effect).

Later, we see the level of principle of Mr. Mandela as he spurns offers for freedom under the conditions set by the S/A government in the 80s. We also read his post-release speech as well as his calls for peace among warring factions in S/A.

Makes you wish for eloquent, principled, and effective leaders like this in America. At least it can inspire future generations toward that direction. By all means, read it.

Freedom struggle against apartheid -- Mandela's own words!
By Harvey
What a wonderful experience-- reading and studying speeches and documents prepared by Nelson Mandela during five decades of struggle against the apartheid regime in South Africa! Here are key documents of the African National Congress, including the Freedom Charter that became the central document of the mass movement that brought down apartheid. Also Mandela's speeches at different stages of the struggle, including historic courtroom addresses when he was on trial for his life; documents Mandela prepared as the apartheid regime was forced to negotiate with him and the ANC in the late 1980s; and his first speeches after he was released from prison in 1990.
These speeches give a vivid reminder of the brutal, racist regime that was apartheid (and we should never forget that the South African regime was a pillar of U.S. domination in Africa from the 1940s on.) Mandela gives us a real feel for the determined, difficult, and courageous struggle of millions of people who never accepted submission to apartheid and the world-wide importance of the fight for a democratic, nonracial South Africa. And you see truly inspiring leadership in the persons of Mandela and his fellow leaders in the ANC.
Don't miss the 32-pages of photos that really help bring this rich struggle to life as well!

A Crazy Snowman is Loose!
By Coffee Addicted Writer (Billy)
Due to the success of the R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series in the early 1990's, other publishing houses tried to copy the format into their own series. The Graveyard School series came from that time.

The kids at Grove Hill call their school Graveyard School because there is a cemetery behind the playground. Several snowstorms have hit the small town. One playground afternoon, sixth-grader Kyle stumbled upon a strange glass eye near the cemetery. He had the idea of using it on his snowman. The other kids in his class were building snow statues, but Kyle was going to make a scary snowman.

Kyle's snowman was tall - taller than the slides. He carved out a wicked grin for the face and used shark teeth. He found two strange branches and used them as arms. All of the kids were scared of it.

A strange thing happens. The student's snow statues were destroyed, but one survived. Kyle's snowman.

This is the first book in the series that I have ever read. It is a short book, but fun to read.

The book is excellent for new teachers in the classroom. It gives insight on how to manage classroom behavior of the students. I am substituting right now and I have written down many things I can do to help me better manage the students and give me peace of mind. I am also taking a course on classroom management and this was the textbook. I am getting a master's to be able to become a teacher.

It is a good resource, but doesn't contain all the details
By Joy Johnson
I would definitely buy this book again. It is a great resource for teachers wanting to set up their classrooms. I found many great ideas on setting up a classroom environment and as I read I made note of items that I would refer to later. I am keeping this book on my shelf as a permanent resource to refer back to as I need it, and I will often.

The book contains a lot of information which is really nice, but in one chapter it only gives an overview of classroom management programs and I was longing for more details on those. However, I can understand why the information was condensed because the book would be really long otherwise.

Overall this book gives me somewhere to start in designing my classroom and has a lot of good information and ideas on how to do it in the best way.

When Lydia’s body is found in the local lake, thedelicate balancing act that has been keeping the Leefamily together tumbles into chaos, forcing them toconfront the long-kept secrets that have been slowlypulling them apart. James, consumed by guilt, setsout on a reckless path that may destroy his marriage.Marilyn, devastated and vengeful, is determined tofind a responsible party, no matter what the cost.Lydia’s older brother, Nathan, is certain that theneighborhood bad boy Jack is somehow involved. But it’s the youngest of the family—Hannah—whoobserves far more than anyone realizes and whomay be the only one who knows the truth aboutwhat happened.

A profoundly moving story of family, history, and the meaning of home, Everything I Never Told Youis both a gripping page-turner and a sensitive familyportrait, exploring the divisions between culturesand the rifts within a family, and uncovering theways in which mothers and daughters, fathers andsons, and husbands and wives struggle, all their lives,to understand one another.

Amazon.com Review

Selected by the Amazon Editors as the #1 Book of the Year: Lydia is dead. From the first sentence of Celeste Ng’s stunning debut, we know that the oldest daughter of the Chinese-American Lee family has died. What follows is a novel that explores alienation, achievement, race, gender, family, and identity--as the police must unravel what has happened to Lydia, the Lee family must uncover the sister and daughter that they hardly knew. There isn’t a false note in this book, and my only concern in describing my profound admiration for Everything I Never Told You is that it might raise unachievable expectations in the reader. But it’s that good. Achingly, precisely, and sensitively written. --Chris Schluep

From Booklist
*Starred Review* A teenage girl goes missing and is later found to have drowned in a nearby lake, and suddenly a once tight-knit family unravels in unexpected ways. As the daughter of a college professor and his stay-at-home wife in a small Ohio town in the 1970s, Lydia Lee is already unwittingly part of the greater societal changes going on all around her. But Lydia suffers from pressure that has nothing to do with tuning out and turning on. Her father is an American born of first-generation Chinese immigrants, and his ethnicity, and hers, make them conspicuous in any setting. Her mother is white, and their interracial marriage raises eyebrows and some intrusive charges of miscegenation. More troubling, however, is her mother’s frustration at having given up medical school for motherhood, and how she blindly and selfishly insists that Lydia follow her road not taken. The cracks in Lydia’s perfect-daughter foundation grow slowly but erupt suddenly and tragically, and her death threatens to destroy her parents and deeply scar her siblings. Tantalizingly thrilling, Ng’s emotionally complex debut novel captures the tension between cultures and generations with the deft touch of a seasoned writer. Ng will be one to watch. --Carol Haggas

Alexander Chee, The New York Times Book Review:
“If we know this story, we haven’t seen it yet in American fiction, not until now… Ng has set two tasks in this novel’s doubled heart—to be exciting, and to tell a story bigger than whatever is behind the crime. She does both by turning the nest of familial resentments into at least four smaller, prickly mysteries full of secrets the family members won’t share… What emerges is a deep, heartfelt portrait of a family struggling with its place in history, and a young woman hoping to be the fulfillment of that struggle. This is, in the end, a novel about the burden of being the first of your kind—a burden you do not always survive.”

Los Angeles Times:
“Excellent…an accomplished debut… heart-wrenching…Ng deftly pulls together the strands of this complex, multigenerational novel. Everything I Never Told You is an engaging work that casts a powerful light on the secrets that have kept an American family together—and that finally end up tearing it apart.”

Boston Globe:
“Wonderfully moving…Emotionally precise…A beautifully crafted study of dysfunction and grief…[This book] will resonate with anyone who has ever had a family drama.”

San Francisco Chronicle:
“A subtle meditation on gender, race and the weight of one generation’s unfulfilled ambitions upon the shoulders—and in the heads—of thenext… Ng deftly and convincingly illustrates the degree to which some miscommunications can never quite berectified.”

O, The Oprah Magazine:
“Cleverly crafted, emotionally perceptive… Ng sensitively dramatizes issues of gender and race that lie at the heart of the story… Ng’s themes of assimilation are themselves deftly interlaced into a taut tale of ever deepening and quickening suspense.”

Los Angeles Review of Books:
“Ng moves gracefully back and forth in time, into the aftermath of the tragedy as well as the distant past, and into the consciousness of each member of the family, creating a series of mysteries and revelations that lead back to the original question: what happened to Lydia?...Ng is masterful in her use of the omniscient narrator, achieving both a historical distance and visceral intimacy with each character’s struggles and failures…On the surface, Ng’s storylines are nothing new. There is a mysterious death, a family pulled apart by misunderstanding and grief, a struggle to fit into the norms of society, yet in the weaving of these threads she creates a work of ambitious complexity. In the end, this novel movingly portrays the burden of difference at a time when difference had no cultural value…Compelling.”

Entertainment Weekly:
“Both a propulsive mystery and a profound examination of a mixed-race family, Ng’s explosive debut chronicles the plight of Marilyn and James Lee after their favored daughter is found dead in a lake.”

Marie Claire:
“The mysterious circumstances of 16-year-old Lydia Lee’s tragic death have her loved ones wondering how, exactly, she spent her free time. This ghostly debut novel calls to mind The Lovely Bones.”

Huffington Post:
“A powerhouse of a debut novel, a literary mystery crafted out of shimmering prose and precise, painful observation about racial barriers, the burden of familial expectations, and the basic human thirst for belonging… Ng’s novel grips readers from page one with the hope of unraveling the mystery behind Lydia’s death—and boy does it deliver, on every front.”

Chris Schluep, Parade:
“The first chapter of Celeste Ng’s debut novel is difficult—the oldest daughter in a family is dead—but what follows is a brilliantly written, surprisingly uplifting exploration of striving in the face of alienation and of the secrets we keep from others. This could be my favorite novel of the year.”

Kevin Nguyen, Grantland:
“The emotional core of Celeste Ng’s debut is what sets it apart. The different ways in which the Lee family handles Lydia’s death create internal friction, and most impressive is the way Ng handles racial politics. With a deft hand, she loads and unpacks the implications of being the only Chinese American family in a small town in Ohio.”

Cleveland Plain-Dealer:
“Beautiful and poignant…. deftly drawn….It’s hard to believe that this is a debut novel for Celeste Ng. She tackles the themes of family dynamics, gender and racial stereotyping, and the weight of expectations, all with insight made more powerful through understatement. She has an exact, sophisticated touch with her prose. The sentences are straightforward. She evokes emotions through devastatingly detailed observations.”

Minneapolis Star Tribune:
“Perceptive…a skillful and moving portrayal of a family in pain…It is to Ng’s credit that it is sometimes difficult for the reader to keep going; the pain and unhappiness is palpable. But it is true to the Lees, and Ng tells all.”

St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
“Impressive… In its evocation of a time and place and society largely gone but hardly forgotten, Everything I Never Told You tells much that today’s reader should learn, ponder and appreciate.”

The Missourian:
“Quiet and intense…A family drama that reveals its secrets slowly, drawing you in."

Dallas Morning News:
“Powerful…[A] beautifully crafted story of a family in pain, and the many reasons, personal and societal, that the Lees have lived most of their lives as strangers to one another. Making us care so deeply about her characters is Ng’s triumph.”

Ann Arbor Observer:
“Deeply moving…masterful…[Ng] doesn’t give her characters any easy futures or her readers any false hope.”

MORE magazine:
“With the skill of a veteran heart surgeon…Ng writes of maternal expectations, ingrained prejudice and sibling conflict in a culture that has just begun to grapple with interracial marriage and shifting gender roles.”

Time Out New York:
“[A] tender debut…The novel touches on the myriad paths grief may take, the secrets everyone keeps and how much a tragedy can affect relationships in a family.”

Sara Vilkomerson, Entertainment Weekly:
“When Lydia Lee, the favored daughter in a mixed-race family in ‘70s Ohio, turns up dead, the Lees’ delicate ecosystem is destroyed. Her parents’ marriage unravels, her brother is consumed by vengeance, and her sister—always an afterthought—hovers nervously, knowing more than anyone realizes. Ng skillfully gathers each thread of the tragedy, uncovering secrets and revealing poignant answers. Grade: A-.”

Vogue.com:
“[A] moving tale… of daughters for whom cultural disconnect is but the first challenge.”

Bustle:
“[A] haunting debut…Ng is a gifted storyteller but an even more gifted character-builder…A powerful book about how those left behind must learn to go on living.”

Amanda Nelson, Book Riot:
“On the surface, this is about a mixed-race Asian-American family dealing with and trying to solve the mysterious death of their favorite teenaged daughter in ‘70s Ohio (this isn’t a spoiler, it happens in the first sentence). What it’s really about all the ways we can be an ‘other’—in society, in our own marriages, in our jobs, and to our parents or children. It’s also about pressure—the pressure to be with people who are like ourselves, and to fit in, and to be everything our parents want us to be. It’s about giving up your career to become a wife and mother, and what that means and doesn’t mean. It’s about dealing with prejudice. It’s about secrets and happiness and misery, and all the things we never tell the people we love. It’s about everything, is what I’m saying, and not a single word is wasted or superfluous.”

Publishers Weekly (starred):
“This emotionally involving debut novel explores themes of belonging using the story of the death of a teenage girl, Lydia, from a mixed-race family in 1970s Ohio…Lydia is remarkably imagined, her unhappy teenage life crafted without an ounce of clich. Ng’s prose is precise and sensitive, her characters richly drawn.”

Library Journal (starred):
“Ng constructs a mesmerizing narrative that shrinks enormous issues of race, prejudice, identity, and gender into the miniaturist dynamics of a single family. A breathtaking triumph, reminiscent of prophetic debuts by Ha Jin, Chang-rae Lee, and Chimamanda Adichie, whose first titles matured into spectacular, continuing literary legacies.”

Booklist (starred):
“Tantalizingly thrilling, Ng’s emotionally complex debut novel captures the tension between cultures and generations with the deft touch of a seasoned writer. Ng will be one to watch.”

Kirkus Reviews:
“Ng expertly explores and exposes the Lee family’s secrets… These long-hidden, quietly explosive truths, weighted by issues of race and gender, slowly bubble to the surface of Ng’s sensitive, absorbing novel and reverberate long after its final page. Ng’s emotionally complex debut novel sucks you in like a strong current and holds you fast until its final secrets surface.”

Jesmyn Ward, National Book Award-winning author ofSalvage the Bones:
“Ng tells a story weighted by death and grief that is vital in all the essential ways; these characters betray and love blindly and are needy and accuse and forgive. They are achingly human, and Ng's writing about them is tender and merciless all at once. At the same time, her story is also about what it means to live in two worlds at the same time, to be Asian and American, an insider and an outsider, and Ng writes about all this and more with terrific nuance.”

Uwem Akpan, #1New York Timesbestselling author ofSay You’re One of Them:
“I couldn’t stop reading Everything I Never Told You . . . the writing is so smooth and keenly observed. The portrait of each member of the Lee family, the exploration of their mixed-race issues and the search for the killer of their sister and daughter, Lydia, pulled at my heartstrings to the very end.”

Dan Chaon, author ofAwait Your Reply:
"Everything I Never Told You is a suspenseful and emotionally complex literary mystery novel, which, weaving back and forth in time, unlocks the secrets beneath the surface of family life. Celeste Ng has written a compellingly tense and moving first book."

Ru Freeman, author ofOn Sal Mal Lane andA Disobedient Girl:
"Celeste Ng leavens the bridge between the disappearance of a young girl, and the personal histories that precede it, with the larger canvas issues of race and gender, without straying from the riveting emotional territory that make up the cornerstones of family: what is given, what is withheld, and what can never be known. Lydia Lee is every parent's dream, fear, and devastation, wholly loved, just as completely lost. It is impossible to resist grieving alongside each one of these bereft, deeply realized characters, for we live their lives, and their story becomes ours from the first paragraph of this marvelous book."

Book Passage (Corte Madera, CA):
“More than a simple portrait of love and loss, this is a beautiful and haunting story of a lost teenage girl attempting to discover her own voice.”

Beautiful and poetic first novel
By K. Blaine
I am stunned that this is Celeste Ng's first novel. I was instantly drawn into this book, with its beautifully drawn characters and superb writing. On its surface, the story is a mystery: What led to the death of Lydia Lee, a sixteen-year-old honor student with (supposedly) everything to live for? In reality, the mystery goes far deeper, into the lives of each member of the family. By the end of the book, the reader is fully in sympathy with each character.

The novel, which takes place in the late 70s, begins with Lydia's death. Was it murder? Was it suicide? Or was it something else? The reader spends most of the novel thinking one thing, only to be surprised at the end with the truth. The author delves into the lives of each family member: James, the father, who never felt really at home in any situation; Marilyn, the mother, whose dreams were shelved by the demands of marriage, family, and the times; Nathan, the older brother, whose brilliance is overlooked; Lydia, the golden child burdened with all the frustrated aspirations of her parents; and Hannah, the overlooked afterthought of a child, a silent but keen observer of everyone in her family. (I was torn between imagining the author as Lydia or as Hannah; I suspect she is an amalgam of both.)

Many chapters in this novel focus on just one character, telling the story from his or her point of view. The reader is led to an understanding of just how profoundly even the best intentions can go terribly awry. Once again, we see people living out their own frustrated dreams through their children, who may or may not be on board. The term "helicopter parent" comes to mind, though this idea was not in vogue until the 90s. In addition, issues of race in America and women's roles are explored through the parents, James and Marilyn, who came of age in the 60s and early 70s at the height of the sexual and civil rights revolutions. Even gay identity comes into play, and remember that this novel is set in 1977, not 2014.

I am compelled to praise the writing of this book. Both psychologically astute and poetic, it draws the reader into the story and evokes sympathy and awe. We see the devastating grief that overtakes each member of the family as he or she tries to see why Lydia died and what he or she may have done to prevent it. I also loved the way the author treated memory, that old deceiver, who smoothes out that which we cannot bear to recall.

I do not think this book is marketed as a YA novel, but it is certainly a book that parents and teenagers may profitably read and discuss together. The issues are fresh and relevant, and I can imagine that meaningful discussions and insights may result. Highly recommended for all readers 14 and above.

A tour de force in storytelling...
By James Hiller
How is it possible that this is a first novel? It is so exquisite, so marvelously perfect, so regally quiet and elegant that surely, it must come from the hands of a old soul author. But no. This is Celeste Ng's first novel, and in it, she has painted such a deeply felt, original story. This book shall remain with me for the rest of my days.

Everything I Never Told You is a story of secrets, of love, of longing, of lies, of race, of identity, and knowledge. The story begins with the death of Lydia, daughter of Marilyn and James, which is told in the first sentence and slowly revealed through the book. Her death drives the narrative, and yet, this story is bigger, grander than this central mystery. Marilyn wanted to defy society's narrow vision of her life and become a doctor, while James is trying to overcome humble beginnings and a society judging him based on his race. Together, they conventions, marry and create a family. Nathan, oldest son on his way to Harvard, Lydia, the middle sister and favorite one, and Hannah, truly growing up invisible. Together, Ng has created a complex, complicated family that rings so true on every page. There isn't a false note in the story.

Perhaps the power of this book lies in the writing of Ng. Her prose is lyrical and light, allowing you to float in the scenes, often between characters, as if you are a literary ghost spying on these people. She moves her story along when it needs to, and allows certain scenes to linger when needed. The effect is magnificent. She also embues the realities of racism, that appropriately jar the reader, which at first seem to be just a "matter of the times" (she painfully uses the word Oriental to describe people) but in reality plays a bigger role in the story. I appreciated it.

By the time you read the final page, you realize Ng has managed to create such a reality, and that when it ends, there is a sense of loss. Much like the family must deal with the loss of Lydia, we must deal with the loss of these imperfect and real people. This book reveals much, about them, about us, about our country, about our society. It is a book that begs for conversation, that begs to be discussed, interpreted, and argued over. It is a book that will be with you for a long time.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

A Broken Family
By JLee
This book could easily be titled, “A Failure to Communicate.” It’s a startling story of a family with private demons and deceptions that really shouldn’t be private. No one can speak up. No one wants to rock the boat. Blame is pointed in the wrong direction, often internally. It seems to begin with a missing teenage girl, but it really started long before that.

The parents learn that their daughter, who they thought was popular, really wasn’t. As far as they come to believe, she had no friends at all. That, too, is untrue. But then nothing is as it seems.

This is a beautifully crafted, emotional novel of the unintentional harms we do to those we love, how we see what we want to see, and how we interpret the present through our own past.

Slouching Towards Bethlehem, by Joan Didion

Audie Award Nominee, Short Stories/Collections, 2013

Universally acclaimed from the time it was first published in 1968, Slouching Towards Bethlehem has been admired for decades as a stylistic masterpiece. Academy Award-winning actress Diane Keaton (Annie Hall, The Family Stone) performs these classic essays, including the title piece, which will transport the listener back to a unique time and place: the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco during the neighborhood's heyday as a countercultural center.

This is Joan Didion's first work of nonfiction, offering an incisive look at the mood of 1960s America and providing an essential portrait of the Californian counterculture. She explores the influences of John Wayne and Howard Hughes, and offers ruminations on the nature of good and evil in a Death Valley motel room. Taking its title from W.B. Yeats' poem "The Second Coming", the essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem all reflect, in one way or another, that "the center cannot hold."

excellent example of the essay form
By J. Jacobs
Didion's collection of essays was recommended to me by writing instructors as an example of excellent essay writing. I found it to be just that. In the first third, she writes a series of remarkable essays about California in the late 1960s. The middle third contains personal essays. And the book finishes with a collection of essays about different places she's been - New York, Hartford, Hawaii, Sacramento.

What makes her writing most impressive is her masterful presentation of portraits, inserting herself just occasionally to remind the reader of who the photographer was, to inject humanity. She does an excellent job combining place and character and shows that long sentences can work. This book is useful both an as example to those who aspire to writing better essays and as a memorable voice from the 1960s.

A period piece, but some of it is classic
By R. Walker
Decades after the fact, this collection of essays is a bit of a period piece, but some of it holds up quite well. The subject of the famous title story -- which first appeared in The Saturday Evening Post in 1967 -- is about the Haight Street scene and, more to the point, the breakdown of human connection that Didion believed that scene represented. She is similarly gloomy about New York in "Goodbye to All That," and about California in "Some Dreamers of the Golden Dream." Though she was in her late 20s and early 30s when she wrote this material, she clearly saw much of what was going on in the 1960s as the activities of a different generation from her own. In any case it's these pieces, along with one about John Wayne, that stand out here, and remain, after all these years, pretty close to extraordinary. Some of the other material (a piece about Joan Baez, etc.) is less memorable. I bought this in the hardback Modern Library edition with a useless introductory essay by Elizabeth Hardwick (but a great photo of Didion on the front cover). Should've gone with paper.

American Anomie
By bibliomane01
This classic 1968 work is justly renowned as Joan Didion's finest collection of essays. Its central theme - and the theme behind much of what Didion writes - is the atomisation of American culture, the way in which things have fallen apart and left millions adrift from the cultural and ethical moorings that their ancestors took for granted. 33 years later, it is ironic to look back on the period that the writer depicts with such grim pathos when it is celebrated as a time of idealism and freedom by the survivors of the sixties. Many pieces in the first and third sections of the book ("Lifestyles in the Golden Land" and "Seven Places of the Mind") seem rather dated; the piece which made the most impression on this reviewer was the least ambitious of the group; to me, the portrait of Comrade Laski of the CPUSA-ML is a tiny masterpiece of irony. The pieces from the second section ("Personals")were much more enjoyable, especially "On Keeping a Notebook" and "On Self-Respect." Overall, "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" is more memorable for the author's endearing prose style than for the individual essays.
