About the Author
Elder Talmage served as an Apostle for 22 years and wrote two Church books that are in wide use to this day: Jesus the Christ and The Articles of Faith. Elder Talmage also published a series of parables—stories taken from his personal experience that teach gospel principles. James Edward Talmage was 13 years old when his family emigrated from their native England and settled in Provo, Utah. Intelligent and thirsty for knowledge, James was a part-time member of the faculty of the Brigham Young Academy in Provo, Utah, by the time he was 17. He went on to study chemistry and geology at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Membership in many prominent scientific societies gave James Talmage access to important people and publications and helped him combat much of the prejudice faced by Latter-day Saints at the time. In 1888 he married Mary May Booth. They became the parents of eight children. From 1894 to 1897 he was president of the University of Deseret in Salt Lake City (now the University of Utah). During that time he bought one of the popular new chain-driven bicycles and rode it often. One evening he arrived home an hour late for dinner, bruised, bloodied, and dirty. Near his home was a single-plank bridge across a ditch. Normally, he dismounted and crossed on foot. But this time he felt he could ride across. He kept at it, crash after crash, until he mastered the maneuver. Elder Talmage was an effective lecturer, and some of his talks and lessons became the basis of some of the books for which he is well-known, including The Articles of Faith. Prior to his call to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in 1911, the First Presidency had asked him to write a book on the life and ministry of the Savior. Later, a room was set aside in the Salt Lake Temple where Elder Talmage could concentrate on his writing. His 700-page book, Jesus the Christ, was published in 1915 and has been reprinted several times since then.

Common sense marketing perspective

Winning firms focus on one of three customer value disciplines: product leadership, customer intimacy, or operational excellence. Trying to be all things to everybody is tantamount to being nothing for anyone. If your firm can't get its act together, you'll find this an inspiring book that makes a compelling case that success is only possible by having the courage to focus on specific tasks & disciplines. This seems very elementary, but I've observed many firms that refused to choose what they wanted to be, ensuring that they became nothing. This book is helpful in positioning exercises.
I have two concerns about the book. 1, it doesn't need to be this long in order to get the central idea across. 2, I'm becoming increasingly convinced that this model is counterproductive in a Geoff Moore tornado period. If you're in a high-tech tornado, wait until Main Street before applying discipline.
Aside from these caveats, I still find the simple model presented in this book as being useful in analyzing market approaches. You have to understand the model in order to know when it isn't appropriate. Product Managers, sales, marketing and product development staff need to be aware of this book and its ideas.

Leadership in Execution

As the title suggests this book is about what sets leading companies apart from the average ones. According to the authors, there are three dimensions along which companies can focus on: cost, innovation, or service. Leading companies are ones that focus all their efforts and resources to excel in one of these dimensions while being average on the others. Operational excellence (cost leadership) is achieved by making the operations of the company as efficient as can be. These are companies such as WalMart that constantly find ways to reduce their Opex and pass these savings to their customers. Their customers are always looking for the lowest price. Product leadership (innovation) is achieved by continually pushing to the market place new products. These are companies such as Intel which constantly release new products into the marketplace to displace their own products and remain ahead of everyone else. Finally, customer intimacy (service leadership) is achieved by companies that make customer service exceptional. These are companies such as Southwestern airlines which have an extreme focus on their customers and have understood to the nth degree their needs and desires.

The most important concept is that leading companies must never loose focus along the chosen dimension. If they do, companies can quickly loose their leadership position and eventually perish. The authors do provide numerous examples of companies that have gone on this journey.

A very insightful and highly recommended business/marketing book that brings execution back to its basics. If I had to add/change something in it, it would be to add more details to the journeys that some companies took from being market leaders to followers. The learnings on the business strategy side through such experience would be very valuable.

One of Best Books I Have Read On the Topic

I have been on a 6 year journey trying to understand and deal with these strange and mystifying behaviors in a family member, ultimately diagnosed as borderline personality disorder (BPD). This book is one of the best that I have ever read on the topic and it gave me new insights and understanding on the neurobiological system and symptoms. Time and time, Porr provides wonderful examples to help explain complex concepts. For example, Porr uses a wonderful analogy of nine colored balls that a juggler would toss into the air to describe each symptom:
#1 blue: impulse control dysregulation
#2 red: mood or affective dysregulation
#3 purple: sensitivity dysregulation
#4 green: cognitive dysregulation
#5 yellow: emotional processing dysregulation
#6 orange: sleep dysregulation
#7 black: pain dysregulation
#8 white: memory dysregulation
#9 pink: anxiety

Reading this book gave me "new eyes" and insights regarding the disorder. It helped me to feel more compassionate towards my family member and learn new ways to communicate and interact. At the same time, Porr emphasized that the person with BPD too needs to do the work to learn coping skills and minimize stressors.

After reading segments of this book, my husband who had thought the family member was misbehaving on purpose, changed his mind after reading Porr's description of the neurobiological underpinnings of the disorder (pp. 40-75)and he also became much more compassionate and understanding. That was a major breathrough!

Porr discusses various treatment methods including dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) and mentalization. I greatly appreciate her perspective and empathy for the families who are going through this with their loved ones. She really "gets it" because she herself has a loved one with BPD.

The BEST book about BPD on the market!!

Our young adult daughter has BPD, a devastating condition (as you know if you are reading this review), not only for her but for our entire family. Over the past 14 years, we have experienced many wrong diagnoses; countless trials with medications that did little to relieve her symptoms and in many cases made things much worse; and, perhaps most important, made us all feel that we were resigned to a life of pain and suffering. For the first time in 14 years, we have hope. I can't tell you how good it feels.

It is alarming to us how little the psychiatric community knows of BPD. The psychiatrists we've worked with only want to prescribe drugs, and none of the psychologists we've known have been DBT-certified. Consequently, we've gotten advice like "set limits and boundaries" or "have her sign a contract with you" or "keep her in the hospital for a few more days - the drugs will work." If you have any experience with a loved one in your family who has BPD, then you know those approaches do not work. In fact, they make things worse.

Valerie Porr's book humanizes the condition. She places us in our daughter's shoes, experiencing life with a defective amygdala and pre-frontal cortex. She introduces the concept that if my mate and I learn DBT theory and skills, we will slowly be able to teach our daughter the same behaviors so that she can live a successful, independent life.

If you're looking for a first book on Borderline Personality Disorder, choose this one: it is grounded in the latest biological research, decades of on-the-ground experience, and a detailed prescription for action. Both great context and great application. If you've read any other books on BPD, then you're obliged to read this one, and quickly: it provides real science and context and -- most importantly -- offers an action plan that works with, rather than against, the illness. Most of my research has led me to angst and despair; Valerie Porr's book has given me new hope by enabling me to understand, encouraging me to accept, and equipping me to act.

About the Author

Jamie Oliver started cooking at his parents' pub, The Cricketers, in Clavering, Essex, at the age of eight. After leaving school he began a career as a chef that took him to the River Caf�, where he was famously spotted by a television production company.

Excellent study guide for the intermediate trader or above. May not be for the beginner that does not already have a trading system or methodology to begin with, although it will help the beginner to recognize the importance of keeping accurate and current records.

Accountability

This book provides a basis for accountability in making trades as you do. I found the psychological part the best. It is somewhat hard to implement the basic structure required by the author for me personally. However it all rings truth in it's wording. This is a work book and therefore leads the reader through a series of questions to let you know how good you understand the basic fundamentals prescribed of his book "Trading For A Living".

It has increased awareness and led me to stop making the same repetitive mistakes. And that is the basis for success in trading.

It could help some people

What is your learning style? If you don't trust that you know something until you've taken a test, this book can help. It does an excellent job of pulling out the key topics and quizzing you on them. There are no 'silly' questions here--only the important stuff. On the other hand, if you like to read and underline, then return to the text when you are actually 'doing' the activity, then this book is probably a waste of money. One nit complaint: some of the labeling of chart features is a bit unclear. Since it is sometimes tough to tell which letter goes with which feature, answering some questions is difficult, even when you know the material.

About the Author
Larry J. Siegel was born in the Bronx in 1947. While living on Jerome Avenue and attending City College of New York (CCNY) in the 1960s, he was swept up in the social and political currents of the time. He became intrigued with the influence contemporary culture had on individual behavior: Did people shape society or did society shape people? He applied his interest in social forces and human behavior to the study of crime and justice. After graduating from CCNY, he attended the criminal justice program at the State University of New York at Albany, earning his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees there. Dr. Siegel began his teaching career at Northeastern University and has also held teaching positions at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire, and in the School of Criminology and Justice Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (UML). Now a Professor Emeritus, he continues to teach courses on criminology and criminal justice in UML'S online master's degree program. Dr. Siegel has written extensively in the area of crime and justice, including books on juvenile law, delinquency, criminology, corrections, criminal justice, and criminal procedure. He is a court certified expert on police conduct and has testified in numerous legal cases.

Clem Bartollas is a professor of Sociology at the University of Northern Iowa. He holds a B.A. from Davis and Elkins College, a B.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary, an S.T.M. from San Francisco Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. in sociology with a special emphasis in criminology from The Ohio State University. He has taught at Pembroke State University, Sangamon State University, and the University of Northern Iowa, where he has received a number of honors, including Distinguished Scholar, the Donald McKay Research Award, and the Regents' Award for Faculty Excellence. Dr. Bartollas is the author of numerous articles and more than 30 texts.

A Great Read

Had to buy this book for class and it was a great book. The book was neutral and talked out the corrections system. This is a good book for any criminal justice major to read, or anyone interested in American prison laws and rules. Easy to follow the book and doesn't have all that fancy stuff other books try to add so they could charge more.

Useful and Great

For those trying to learn English, this book is a good start to begin learning. The exercises given in the book are useful and easy to understand. I like the use of flashcards and useful websites to aid the learning. Self discipline and being consistent are important in order to let this book be useful. Great book!

An effective guide for English!!

A very effective guide to be fluent in English in 90 days. The tools used in the book are great. I liked the Learn with oliver website which is a great tool. Tools like LingQ and ANKI tool are just as good to speed up the process. At the end of the 90 day course one can know about 1680 words which is phenomenal. I liked the concept of the book and the exercises at the end of the book help a lot.

I am a native english speaker, but I wanted to find a guide to help me teach English to others. This contains some sound methods to take your language skills to the next level. It teaches you the importance of being very structured and making a plan when learning. I will definitely be implementing some of these techniques when teaching as a volunteer.
